The Forza Italia Massa council groupon behalf of the provincial coordination of the party, believes it is necessary to return to the topic ofexpansion of the port of Marina di Carrara, expressing a contrary opinion.

The municipal commissioner of Massa is taking a stand Sergio Bordigoni and the deputy municipal commissioner Sonia Castellinibased on the observations provided by the municipal administration of Massa through its technical offices, of Department of Earth Sciences of the University of Pisa and dellApuoversiliesi Paladins Association. Subjects who are opposing the thesis, supported byPort System Authority of the Eastern Ligurian Sea, according to which the expansion of the port of Marina di Carrara would produce limited effects regarding coastal erosion and bathing in the Massa area.

“Forza Italia has always reiterated its NO to the expansion of the airport – they explain Bordigoni and Castelliniand in 2018 the theme was among the founding points of our electoral program. The damage caused by erosion is there for all to see. Over time we have been deprived of 160 meters of beach along the entire Massa area, with environmental and economic repercussions. Less beach means less tourist attraction and, consequently, less use of the workforce and less wealth to distribute over the territory. The various experiments that have followed one another over time, from geotubes to cliffs, have produced nothing.

It is necessary to save what can be saved and reiterate our opinion against enlargement, in the absence of shared solutions and projects. A territory that lives off tourism cannot risk seeing its coasts and its economy irreversibly compromised by works that would undermine the fragile natural balance. Forza Italia has always promoted solutions that are achievable and compatible with the economic reality of the area and for this reason we are aware that the port of Marina cannot be canceled and that it constitutes a resource. However, we ask that, before considering further interventions, all initiatives be implemented and the investments necessary to carry out the works to defend and safeguard our beaches and to protect bathing on the Massa coastline be allocated”.

“Nourishment, or the less incisive reprofiling of the coast certainly cannot be considered a solution to the problem – they continue – but expensive actions that try to stop it, taking away resources from Tuscan citizens, when they could be more profitably used to finance, among other things, public healthcare. As proof of the incoherence of the interventions we see, on the one hand, the expense for the dredging of the port of Viareggio, with the transport of the resulting sand off the coast of Lido di Camaiore, where the problem of erosion does not appear to exist, and on the other, the expense for the reprofiling of the Massa coast.

We wonder if it would be absurd to foresee the release of the Viareggio sand off our coast, saving on land transport of the sand necessary for reprofiling the coast. We don’t need spot interventions, just to demonstrate the Region’s interest, but projects that offer definitive solutions capable of tackling the erosive phenomenon, whether generated by natural or artificial factors, caused by man. In the past Forza Italia had proposed transforming the port into a tourist port, also in consideration of the weight that shipbuilding has on the local economy, diverting goods traffic to the nearby port of La Spezia.

The huge investments by the largest company in the area, for the construction of its own logistics hub in the Marina di Carrara backport area, with the resulting employment implications, together with the needs of the others, no longer make this path viable”.
