European and administrative elections in Bergamo, deadlines for official lists and applications
Descriptive text here

The deadlines for submitting candidacies for the 2024 elections are approaching, namely the European elections and the local elections in Bergamo.

European deadlines

As regards the European elections, the lists must be deposited from 8am to 8pm on Tuesday 30 April (the 40th day before the votes) and from 8am to 8pm on May 1st (the 39th day). The list must be deposited, for each electoral constituency, at the registry of the Court of Appeal of the district capital (in our case Milan), where the district electoral office is located. Subsequently, the correctness of the documentation will be verified.

The electoral system and the candidates

The voters of Bergamo will have to choose – on 8 and 9 June – among the candidates present in their constituency of residence, i.e. that of the North-West, which also includes Lombardy (together with Valle d’Aosta, Liguria and Piedmont): it is the most populous of the five into which Italy is divided and holds 20 seats out of 76 total for ours (and the 720 of the European Parliament).

The electoral system is proportional, with a threshold of 4 percent and voters (who must be 18 years of age to vote, 25 to be elected) can express from one to three preferences, but must respect the alternation gender, otherwise the second or third choice will be cancelled. The candidates who obtain the highest number of preferences on their list are elected: in the event of a tie, preference is given to the person higher up on the list. Parties can present a maximum number of candidates equal to the total number of seats allocated to each constituency. If elected in more than one, the candidate will have to choose which one to be formally elected in and will therefore effectively decide who to leave his place among the first non-elected ones to.

At the moment, there are three candidates from Bergamo in the North-West constituency: they are the mayor of Bergamo Giorgio Gori for the Democratic Party; the regional undersecretary for Youth and Sport Lara Magoni with Brothers of Italy and the regional councilor Giovanni Malanchini for the League.

Administrative deadlines

The lists for the candidacies of the administrative elections in Bergamo must be presented, under penalty of exclusion from the electoral competition, from 8 am on the 30th day to 12 pm on the 29th day before the voting date, therefore from 8 am on 10 May to 12 pm on 11 May.

In the center-left, all six teams officially showed up in support of Elena Carnevali (Pd, Gori List for Carnevali, Civic List Elena Carnevali Mayor, Bergamo Insieme, Futura, Bergamo Europea). In the centre-right, however, for the moment only the civic number of the mayoral candidate has been presented Andrea Pezzotta.

However, on May 3rd the League should make its list official at the station, chosen specifically as the representative location of its electoral campaign, while on the following May 11th it will be Forza Italia’s turn. Fratelli d’Italia, for now, has not yet announced a date and location.
