From Novacella to Castellanza, the historic torchlight procession remembers the mayor Mirella Cerini

There is silence uniting the city of Castellanza on this gray April afternoon. The boys and girls returned from torchlight procession in Novacella, in the Bolzano area, carried the torch as required by a ritual that has been repeated for 67 years. But this year it is not a moment of celebration, it cannot be because the smile of the city mayor is not there to welcome them, Mirella Cerini, who died on April 25th after the official speech for the Liberation. His death, inside the town hall due to an illness, still wearing the tricolor sash, shocked everyone.

On Sunday 28 April, many people attended the return of the torch, including the woman’s family. Few words and a lot of respectful silence for an initial moment of public condolence while waiting to know the date of the autopsy and funeral ceremony. Don Jacopo wanted to remember how «qThis is meant to be a sign of gratitude for his being present».

Meanwhile, the April 30th meeting of the city council and the May 1st inauguration of the Large Linear Piazza dell’Olona, a project that Mirella Cerini was particularly keen on, were cancelled.
