“AND’ an important event of significant educational and cultural interest which sees the School as the protagonist, which is transformed, for a moment, into a Museum, as for the first time 55 archaeological finds chosen from over 200 belonging to a private collection were made available by the Superintendence of Catania to be presented in the exhibition itinerary set up inside the high school”. He announced it Irene Donatella AprileSuperintendent of Cultural and Environmental Heritage of Catania.

TOMORROW – Monday 29 April, for the first time ever, 55 archaeological finds dating back to the 6th – 7th century BC will be shown and for this exhibition, a school will be transformed into a museum. It is archeology that goes among young people.

An archaeological heritage that seemed lost will now be on display for the first time!

” Like Archeoclub D’Italia, we are proud of this work, of giving back to the school community – stated Rosario Santanastasio, National President of Archeoclub D’Italia – and therefore to possible users such as teachers, parents, the students themselves and citizens of a heritage that seemed lost. We understand the meaning of the project and its impact on the cultural, didactic, educational and tourist level; we understand its value and scope at a regional and national level”.

The project starts from Paternò Rediscovered memories with on display the archaeological heritage returned to the community, to the whole of society.

“A revolution in the name of cultural cooperation starts from Paternò. Is called Rediscovered memories and it is a unique exhibition of its kind because it brings for the first time to a Sicilian school – a symbolic place of education and cultural growth – the archaeological assets returned to the Superintendency of Catania in 2019 thanks to the Archeoclub of Italy and preserved in its deposits – announced Francesco Finocchiaro National Councilor of the Archeoclub D’Italia – the result of a chance discovery. The project is the first in Italy together with the Liceo Tasso in Rome.

The inauguration will take place TOMORROW – Monday 29 April at 11.00 in the main hall of the “Francesco de Sanctis” state high school in via Fogazzaro 18 in Paternò“.

The school becomes a museum of cultural identity.

“The school, therefore, also as a memory of cultural identity and also a museum of cultural heritage. In fact, it will be the heritage belonging to our history that will go towards the children and not vice versa.

In fact, it was thanks to synergistic work between the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage of Catania and the Archeoclub d’Italia association with its headquarters in Ibla Major of Paternò, that the exhibition was achieved in the classrooms of the De Sanctis state high school of Paternò. A work conducted by the members of the association – continued Fionocchiaro – the lawyers Paolo Di Caro And Carmelo Tirenna, together with the official of the archaeological section doctor Michela Ursino. The primary aim of the operation is to return to the territory, and therefore to the community, the heritage disseminated in the many private collections or in museum deposits, highlighting the need to make these assets usable and continue to support the work of the police, committed every day in the fight against memory thieves.”

It all starts from the Charter of Catania, a regulatory innovation, now exported at a national level and thanks to which the Superintendencies are starting to make known an archaeological heritage that has never been exposed!

“The event, the first in Sicily, was made possible thanks to the work of the Sicily Region which implemented the Charter of Cataniaa regulatory innovation, now exported nationally, which allows stolen and recovered artefacts to come out of storage and be displayed to the public and, in particular in Paternò, in a school.

In fact, the “Francesco De Sanctis” high school is the setting for the exhibition supported with enthusiasm by the school director, Professor Saint Di Mauro which believed in and supported the project which includes educational actions within the Laboratory for digital communication and documentation with actions aimed at inclusion. A project made possible thanks to the work of the president of the Ibla Major section of the Archeoclub of Italy, the architect Angelo Perri – concluded Francesco Finocchiaro – and of the entire management, in particular the archaeologist Letizia Blanco who took care of teaching at school and Ornella Palmisciano for graphics. The work carried out by I. was decisiveRene Donatella Aprile, superintendent of cultural heritage of Catania. To the archaeologist Rosalba Panviniacademic professor and former regional superintendent and museum director, was entrusted with the scientific direction of the cultural operation.

The project was financed by the Ars and the regional department for cultural heritage and Sicilian identity, with the patronage of the Federico II Foundation and the Archeolcub of Italy. The exhibition will be open to visitors from 29 April to 31 May 2024“.
