Educating children about empathy, a conference to reflect

“We thought we’d organize a moment of reflection dedicated to gender violence. Unfortunately, this is a topic that is too current in our country” say Cooperativa Serena, the organizers of the conference, “Educating children in empathy” which will be held at the former Teatro Verdi in Ferrara at 3pm, next Monday 29 April.

This event was born together with the creation of a fairy tale entitled “Free as a dragonfly and courageous as a bee” by the educators of the Monestirolo Nature Nursery and Nursery School, a Cooperativa Serena structure coordinated by Tomas Gallerani. “A fairy tale for children, even very young ones, which talks about resilience, redemption, friendship and support, courage and freedom” continues Gallerani. “As adults we have the moral responsibility to address even difficult issues like this. The children in our services will be the teenagers and adults of tomorrow. And we want to give them all the possible tools to face a sometimes difficult and complex society.”

The event is sponsored by the University of Ferrara and the Municipality of Ferrara. Chiara Bertolasi, vice president of Coop Serena, Ruggero Villani, director of Confcooperative and president of the School of Territorial Development, Dorota Kusiak, councilor of the Municipality of Ferrara will participate.

Speakers will include Stefania Guglielmi, president of Udi, Paola Castagnotto, president of the Women’s and Justice Centre, Luisa Lampronti, coordinator of “La nuova Casa di Federica”, Paola Bastianoni, master director of protection of rights and protection of minors, Unife, Thomas Casadei, director of the Crid – Center of Interdepartmental Research on discrimination and vulnerability at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia.

There will also be a reading of the fairy tale “Free like a dragonfly, brave like a bee” by Ludovica Vicini, who illustrated the fairy tale, and Tomas Gallerani, head of the childhood area of Coop Serena.

“The fairy tale that the teachers created for our children is dedicated to Giulia Cecchettin, who was not the first woman killed at the hands of a man and unfortunately not the last. This conference, which addresses the topic of education in respect from an early age – says Chiara Bertolasi, vice president of Coop Serena who will open the event – is aimed at everyone. Together with the institutions, associations and cooperatives, which have always dealt with gender violence, we want to make our contribution to a culture of widespread responsibility, aware that silence also kills”.

Cooperativa Serena is part of the Confcooperative Ferrara system.
