Tuscan Maremma Doc: Vinitaly confirms itself as an important stage

Grosseto: The Consortium for the Protection of Tuscan Maremma Wines is satisfied with the participation in Vinitaly where the Denomination was put on display, with the new graphic image, in front of an audience of operators and press increasingly attracted by a somewhat alternative Tuscany of wine, which continues to have growth despite the critical moment in the sector.

Great interest – with hundreds of tastings done at the fair – for the top ten of the Vermentino Grand Prix which was being tasted for the first time. Beyond the top ten – on which the spotlight was focused – the other labels of this type and the Vermentino Superiore which, little by little, are growing among the companies’ proposals also performed very well.

In general in the sector there is a general positive trend for white and rosé wines which reach 50% of the choices and a decrease instead for still red wines to 38%, as emerges from an analysis by Ismea presented in the Confagricoltura space precisely during the 56th edition of Vinitaly. During the presentation, the president of the Consortium, Francesco Mazzei, also spoke and stated: “The Tuscan Maremma closes with a positive sign precisely because it is driven by the Vermentino which we have been able to valorise”.

At the consortium counter, almost 80 wines from 41 different companies for tasting were able to offer an overview of the Denomination. If the whites, driven by the excellent performance of Vermentino, are experiencing a particularly “happy” moment, it is also true that experts have expressed positive opinions for the rosés and reds, starting with the native Ciliegiolo, Alicante and Sangiovese, up to to Supertuscan style blends and the international Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet franc, Merlot, Syrah and Petit Verdot, pure or in Bordeaux blend.

Precisely the variety of the DOC – with a good 40% of white wines, allows it to be the only one, among the most important Tuscan DOPs, with a positive sign in the 2023 vintage and the sign is positive, even if slight, also for the first three months of 2024 (AVITO data). “Consumers are looking for something new and I think this works in our favor, in addition to producing wine in one of the most beautiful and uncontaminated areas in the whole country”, concludes Mazzei.
