Varese: trial for the illicit trafficking of puppy dogs

The public prosecutor has filed documents in the trial against the owner of a pet shop for illegal dog trafficking. The charges stem from puppies being sold without microchips and health certifications, and from the administration of banned drugs, resulting in the deaths of some puppies

Varese – In the latest development of the trial against owner of a pet shop, the public prosecutor filed a wide range of documents, including veterinary medical certificates, puppy passports and search reports. This move was necessary after, in the previous hearing, the prosecution’s list of witnesses was not admitted due to a procedural irregularity.

The trial, which will begin in February 2025, sees the civil party represented by an individual assisted by the lawyer Elisa Scarpino, while the accused will be subjected to examination. His lawyer also filed a veterinary medico-legal opinion. The charges arise from an investigation conducted by the Carabinieri Environmental police investigative unitagri-food and forestry sector of Varese in 2020, which put the spotlight on puppies from Eastern Europe And sold in shops managed by the 57-year-old from Varese.

According to the accusation, these puppies, of various breeds, did not have microchips for individual identification and the necessary health certifications. Furthermore, their real age would have been lower than that reported on official documents, which would prevent the animals from being transported. The carabinieri, together with the veterinarians of Ats Insubria, found and seized large quantities of flagyl-metronidazole, a drug for human use prohibited for animals. From here the accusations of abusive practice of the veterinary profession, animal abuse, fraud in tradeAnd illicit trafficking of pets.

The accusation claims that the trader delivered to customers puppies of different origin and quality from that declared and agreed upon, with an age lower than that indicated in the documents and with precarious health conditions. Some puppies died shortly after purchase due to drug poisoning or parvovirus, following “improper” drug treatments with incorrect dosages and dangerous for health.
