Ragusa, lack of doctor on board in ambulances. Firrincieli scolds the mayor: “We intervened late”

“The lack of a doctor on board the 118 ambulances, which from Wednesday 1 May will become one of the most serious problems on the health front of our city, also requires a political reflection”. This is what Sergio Firrincieli (in the photo), municipal councilor of the m5s Ragusa, says after having read the mayor’s statements on the delicate topic.

“I don’t doubt – he continues – that the mayor and ASP management have been discussing the delicate issue and the ways to resolve it for days, however, it must be specified that our mayor has been aware of the problem for months (November 2023). Precisely in that period, in fact, the experts informed the mayor about this and other critical issues and requested a meeting in the conference of mayors which was never convened in this regard. What critical issues did you raise? 118 stations sometimes without medical, nursing and support staff; territorial emergency facilities which should help the disposal and flow of patients in the emergency room with very few doctors available and therefore with uncovered shifts; emergency room is now in a deep crisis which leads, as in many cases described, even to national television reports, to mass resignations of nursing and medical staff. Having started talking about these issues late has therefore produced late interventions such as the call for nurses whose final date for submitting applications is April 23rd, all this close to May 1st, when the shortage of doctors in ambulances will begin. It appears, among other things, that the tender in question appears to have been prepared to recruit nursing staff given the fact that those currently in force do not intend to provide their support by not taking on the responsibility of getting into ambulances without a doctor on board. So, apparently, and if so it would be very serious, they are looking for another loophole by recruiting more staff. Aspects to be verified but which tell us a lot about an issue that still needs to be deciphered. What is the political consideration to be made? As usual, the lack of interventionism of the municipal administration, the waiting believing that the situation will resolve itself or that a knight in silver armor will help us, makes us arrive close to problems without a solution and forced to operate in an emergency. Let’s say no to this way of acting by the mayor who could have been more prompt. This is not how a good family man works and acts. All this, above all, when we are faced with a complex and potentially dangerous situation for the community. Answers are needed.”
