Terrified to death, with first and second degree burns on his neck, chest and legs. Kumar Ravindera 42-year-old homeless man of Indian origin, got off the train yesterday morning at the “Villa Claudia” station in Anzio, desperately asked the people on the dock for help. She asked for a cell phone so she could raise the alarm to 112. “They tried to set me on fire”, he shouted in broken Italian. Confused, barely able to speak, almost naked because he had taken off his clothes that had caught fire. The man was immediately rescued by officers from the south coast police station Rome but also by an Ares 118 ambulance. The medics accompanied him urgently first to the combined hospitals of the town of the Landing and then to the major burns center of the Sant’Eugenio dell’Eur, in Rome where he arrived in code red. The doctors are treating his injuries, fortunately his life is not in danger. But who was it?

THE PLACE

Detectives from the police district are investigating the case. We are looking for confirmation of the story. Before being taken care of by the health workers, Kumar managed to give a brief description of the place where the crime allegedly occurred. «I was sleeping in my bed near an overpass, suddenly some boys appeared. They threw alcohol on me.” The ambush apparently took place around nine o’clock yesterday morning near another railway station that connects Rome to Anzio, near the “Padiglione” stop. The investigators searched the area and searched for the camp near the abandoned industrial warehouse of the former Palmolive. But no signs attributable to outbreaks were found in that place. Officers have not found the exact location. The homeless man, of course, was shocked and may not have been able to pinpoint exactly where he was attacked. He certainly suffered burns. For this reason, the police will continue their searches in the next few hours, also activating their colleagues from the forensic police to investigate the case. At the same time, the agents are analyzing the images recorded by the video surveillance systems present in the Pavilion and Villa Claudia stations.

THE PREVIOUS

The investigations are only just beginning. The serious episode brings to mind another dramatic event that shocked the Roman coast 15 years ago. It was dawn on February 2, 2009 when Singh L., another 36-year-old Indian homeless man, was attacked by the gang in the waiting room of the Nettuno train station. In the commando there were three Italians, one of whom was a minor. The carabinieri arrived at them in the afternoon. According to the investigators, it was a violent group that was looking for a homeless man to “teach a lesson” that day. The depositions at the attempted murder trial are chilling. In passing the buck, the authors tried to shift responsibility by pointing out one of the boys in particular: «Already two weeks ago he wanted to set fire to another homeless man who had denied him a cigarette. “Je do foco”, he said. The three, according to the prosecution, decided to transform the homeless man who slept at the station into a human torch “out of boredom”. The episode was defined as “horrifying” by the then Head of State Giorgio Napolitano and aroused great indignation among the inhabitants of the coast who, in fact, then adopted and took care of the homeless man.
