Viterbo – “San Pellegrino in fiore, we wanted to cause as little inconvenience as possible to residents and traders”. Thus Raffaele Ascenzi, winner of the ideas competition launched by the municipality for San Pellegrino in fiore.
“The works began on Monday – explains Ascenzi – to arrive in time for the inauguration day with the preparation of the squares and connecting streets. The complexity of the structures to be created, with curvilinear geometries and joints to be executed with the utmost precision, would probably have required a longer period, but we decided to cause as little inconvenience as possible to residents and traders of the historic center”.

“We hope – continues Ascenzi – that everyone’s effort can contribute to the perfect realization of this edition of San Pellegrino in fiore and repay the very high expectations. The Medieval theme chosen for the competition of ideas stimulated us to define the drawings on the ground of the planters which will host essences of various colors and scents to recreate the Cosmatesque floors of our Cathedral and the decorations of the stone barriers kept in the oldest churches of the city” .
Two nurserymen will share the task of creating the compositions. The Unitus botanical garden will instead set up the entrance to the San Pellegrino district by setting up the road that leads from Porta San Pietro to the Palazzo degli Alessandri.

“The period that we decided to exalt – concludes Ascenzi – is the late Middle Ages, which saw Viterbo in its maximum splendor become the papal seat, with its austere gray stone architecture shaped and decorated with floral motifs and references to architectural orders.
Cosmatesque geometries anticipate in stone the forms of the topiary and late Renaissance Italian gardens”.
