“Climate, the next few months are decisive for the future”

Even in Modena, the climate data for 2023 are alarming and must be monitored carefully. This, in a nutshell, is the analysis that emerged in the speech ‘The Climate in Modena between past, present and future’ which, yesterday afternoon, as part of the Sustainable Development Festival, saw the participation of technicians from the Geophysical Observatory University of Modena Luca Lombroso, Francesca Despini and Sofia Costanzini. To better frame the Modena situation, Lombroso introduced his speech by citing global data. “To understand the gravity of the situation – explains the meteorologist – we could imagine ourselves on a ship heading towards an iceberg. Before the Paris Agreement, in which the objective of limiting the increase in average temperature to 1 was set, 5 °C compared to pre-industrial levels, the impact seemed inevitable and catastrophic. Today, it seems that the damage from this ‘crash’ may be limited, but if we think about the data for 2023, the year in which we got dangerously close to the threshold. 1.5°, we need to keep our attention high.” The blame for the increase in temperatures, continues Lombroso, “comes from the concentration of Co2 in the atmosphere. These days we are reaching the annual maximum”.

The next few months will be decisive in understanding the future of the planet. If, in fact, temperatures continue to increase, “we will need to act immediately to reverse the trend. If, however, the increase is less drastic, we will have more time available”. Yesterday at the Festival the starchitect Carlo Ratti was the guest of honor. And today we continue at the former AEM: in the morning we will talk about innovation and sustainability in the company (Mediamo in collaboration with the Association for Corporate Social Responsibility); to the afternoon of inclusion.
