PESARO – Cristina is a young mother from Pesaro, who alone takes care of and assists her splendid sons, Cristian, 15, and Alessandro, 14, who both suffer from Duchenne muscular dystrophy, in all their needs. Duchenne dystrophy is the most frequent type of dystrophy in childhood, a genetic disease classified among rare, degenerative pathologies, which leads to a very serious disability. Now the mother is launching an appeal to raise funds to buy an equipped van which has become indispensable to ensure the transportation of her children in wheelchairs.
«I am a single mother, and I look after my boys from every point of view – says Cristina – for five years I have been the only one to assist them at night, worrying about moving them and accommodating them, even for 12 hours at a time».

«During the day – continues the mother – we are assisted by our private staff, and some volunteers and friends, with well-defined roles: but nothing so far has been easy for us, to ensure my children have as peaceful a life as possible». In addition to dystrophy, there are unfortunately comorbidities, from severe autism for Cristian and ADHD for Alessandro, confirmed by medical-legal reports and certified with very serious disabilities. But this does not take away the smile from mother Cristina, nor does it undermine her determination to make her children’s lives as dignified and rich in experiences as possible: last August she obtained for Cristian and Alessandro from the regional clinical center of reference, NeMo di Torrette di Ancona, two electric wheelchairs.
«A wonderful and fundamental innovation for the social autonomy of the kids and necessary for their physical needs – explains Cristina – but unfortunately not supported by an adequate means of transport equipped for the two wheelchairs».

«The vehicle in our possession at the moment – he adds – is a second-hand Fiat Doblò purchased in 2021, when Cristian and Alessandro were still children and used lighter manual wheelchairs, it is a vehicle used for the transport of a single passenger disabled: Alessandro had to sit in the passenger seat. Now, for his safety, it is no longer possible. Unfortunately we are not able to face the expense of 50,000 euros estimated by specialized companies for the purchase of an equipped van, which should also be equipped with the anchors essential for the safe transport of the aids”.
