Alleged robbers trapped by cigarette butts: arrests are made

CEGLIE MESSAPICA – Serious mistake to have a smoke at the crime scene. The cigarette butts recovered by the police have framed the alleged perpetrators of a tobacco shop robbery perpetrated in recent months in Ceglie Messapica. DNA and cameras were crucial in the investigation which resulted in the arrest of two people who today (Friday 26 April) were granted a precautionary custody order in prison issued by the investigating judge of the Brindisi court, at the request of the local prosecutor’s office. The investigations were conducted by the soldiers of the San Vito dei Normanni company.

The robbers were armed with guns. One of the two pointed the gun at the owner of the business, taking possession of the money kept in the cash register, for an amount equal to approximately 1700 euros. The accomplice cleaned the displays, stealing 60 packets of cigarettes and 465 scratch tickets, then placing them in a plastic bag. Both fled in a car driven by an accomplice.

The carabinieri acquired the images taken by the video surveillance systems of the tobacconist and surrounding areas. They also took some cigarette stumps found near the shop. From these findings, DNA traces compatible with one of the suspects were obtained. Both (one imprisoned at the Brindisi prison, the other in the same prison where he was already detained for another reason) are accused of aggravated robbery and illegal possession of a weapon.
