PISTOIA – “Waste in Pistoia, the service worsens and the Tari increases”. This is what the minority council group Pistoia Ecologista e Progressista highlights in a statement. In fact, the question presented to the city council on the topic of waste collection and disposal is from the council group.

“It’s not a good image that the city has been offering of itself in recent weeks. For some time in the areas of Viale Adua, Belvedere and surrounding areas it has not been uncommon to come across piles of non-separatable waste dumped on streets and pavements near bins full to the brim” highlights the council group.

Still on the subject of waste, explains Pistoia Ecologist and Progressista, at the eco-stage of the Esselunga car park the picture is even more disheartening: “the collection point should be used to deliver small special waste (batteries, toner, used oil) , in reality for some time there has been an excessive accumulation of waste, including bulky waste, so much so as to prevent access and, today, to lead to its closure, which has not solved the problems!.

The Pistoia Ecologist and Progressist council group therefore submitted a question to the City Council to ask the Mayor and the councilor Sgueglia how many times Alia goes to empty the bins of non-separatable waste in the areas concerned, if the waste accumulated in land and whether the administration is aware of interventions by environmental inspectors in the areas in question.

Furthermore, how is the Esselunga eco-stage controlled and, above all, whether the creation of other collection centers is planned, in other areas of the Municipality, better structured and better controlled.

“The creation of widespread ecological islands is a fundamental step in moving towards integral door-to-door. Going beyond the current waste collection and disposal system which to date has proven to be a failure. This is demonstrated by the data on waste separation and also by the Tari increases brought to the commission by the council in recent days” continues the council group.

The ATO plan provides for the maximum TARI increases for Pistoia for two years in a row (+7.2% in 2024 and 2025). This, net of the deductions applied by the Municipality, will mean an average increase of 5.5% in the bills of citizens and businesses. “But this is not the case for everyone: other Municipalities limit the increases or even reduce the tariffs. For example, Sesto Fiorentino which in 2018, when Tomasi was already governing in Pistoia, decided to adopt door-to-door separate waste collection. And where today, for 2024, there are no increases while in 2025 the tariffs will decrease by as much as 5%”.
