Sant’Alfonso Hospital, mayors-Morgante pact: except for the emergency room

An agreement was reached, the closure of the project was averted Emergency room and the meeting of mayors scheduled for today afternoon at 4pm was cancelled, in yesterday’s meeting aimed at discussing the fate of the hospital in Sant’Agata de’ Goti. It is the summary of the summit between the general director of Rummo Maria Morgante and the mayors of the municipalities of Benevento, Sant’Agata de’ Goti, Apex, File it, Twogenta And Frasso Telesino: Clemente Mastella, Salvatore Riccio, Angelo Pepe, Domenico Parisi, Clemente Di Cerbo and Pasquale Viscusi. «We had – stated Mastella – positive signals from the meeting with the manager, confirming the fact that collaboration between institutions always produces advantageous effects. The Sant’Alfonso emergency room will not close and the facility will continue to operate pending the transfer of the oncology unit there. Pascale of Naples which represents a further enhancement for the hospital. We appeal to doctors to respond to the constant requests coming from the hospital. Based on the data communicated today, 12,000 services are provided at Sant’Alfonso per year and therefore it must be protected. However, we must deal with the shortage of medical personnel, take action to replenish them and continue to make sacrifices. It is appropriate that, for clarity, I also make a mandatory passage on differentiated autonomy which is extremely harmful for our territory because it risks destroying even the city hospital, together with all the smaller structures. The population must be made aware of this situation. It is of fundamental importance to reverse the trend and make the emergency departments more attractive, incentivising doctors financially to stop their flight.”

THE SINKING

The former minister then insists: «The countless competitions activated have not served to replenish the workforce but, on the other hand, even when they accept the position they end up leaving. It is certainly not the fault of the hospital or the Region if the fees are what they are because decisions in this regard must be made elsewhere. If we spend 2 billion a year out of 14 billion destined for the National Health Service, we will continue to drag on a generalized crisis which will negatively affect the category of doctors, who are increasingly determined to find alternative solutions”. The mayor of Sant’Agata provided the most detailed data on the current situation. «The general director – explained Riccio – has ensured that the shifts in the emergency room will be ensured beyond May 12th, ensuring that they are renewed from time to time while waiting for the situation to change. The single regional competition did not have the desired effects because of the 363 emergency doctors requested by the Region to fill the staffing gaps in the structures of the entire territory, only 62 responded to the call and 50 were hired. But no one chose Rummo who had asked for 13 doctors.” So the breath of fresh air expected from the regional competition has not arrived and the possibility of having 8 emergency doctors at Rummo and 5 at Sant’Alfonso to cover the shifts has vanished. The needs of emergency doctors will be met with the additional hours and with the external agreements already activated but we cannot continue on this path indefinitely.

«In a serene and proactive climate – concluded the general director of the Morgante hospital – and of sincere institutional collaboration, we discussed the need to find every possible solution to mitigate the inconveniences that will affect the Sant’Agata emergency room. Data in hand, I illustrated to the mayors the objective difficulties we encounter in finding emergency doctors. We have done everything we can to address the shortage of staff allocated to the emergency room, which has been heavily penalized by retirements and exemptions of medical managers from night shifts. We will continue as long as it is possible to ask for the precious collaboration of the professionals on duty who, with great self-sacrifice and sacrifice, are committed to guaranteeing 24-hour shift coverage at the Sant’Agata emergency room.”
