Healthcare in Puglia, unsustainable waiting lists in Lecce

“In this morning’s inspection at the Cup of the former Vito Fazzi hospital in Lecce, we faced the problem of some saturated diaries, which makes it impossible to book certain medical visits and diagnostic tests. A critical situation that concerns not only the Lecce Local Health Authority but all Apulian healthcare companies.” This is reported by Paolo Pagliaro, group leader of La Puglia tomorrow in the Regional Council, returning to a topic, that of waiting lists which concerns not only the Leccese area, but the entire region.

“Despite the efforts of doctors and the management of the Lecce Local Health Authority – continues Pagliaro – to meet the needs of citizens, the waiting times for some services are unsustainable. Hence the need to inform citizens, especially the less well-off, on the possibility that the law offers to guarantee everyone the right to treatment, even those who cannot afford paid visits and tests. Decree 124 of 1998 establishes that the Regions, together with the local health authorities and hospitals, establish the maximum times between request for service and execution”. The priority code must be indicated on the prescription made “by the general practitioner – observes Pagliaro – or by the pediatrician or by the medical guard. In the meantime, there is a tutor agenda, a special list that is updated whenever reservations are canceled or spaces become free for visits and exams, and therefore the Cup reserves the right to recall waiting citizens. If the times are longer, you can ask for the service to be provided intramally without having to pay the doctor as a private individual but only paying the copay, if due. This is a right,” he concluded.
