Lamezia, collaboration between the “Fiorentino” high school and the hospital: three initiatives on BLS techniques, organ donation and substances of abuse

Lamezia Terme – The collaboration between the Francesco Fiorentino Classical-Artistic High School and the “Giovanni Paolo II” hospital of Lamezia Terme continues, with three important initiatives organized in the month of April by Professor Scavelli, guidance tutor and teaching coordinator of the biomedical branch, with the support of Dr. S. Renne, medical director of the city hospital and representative of the Medical Association in the “Enhancement in Biology with Biomedical Curvature” path. The meetings, excellently managed by doctors Fanny Galeno, medical director of the Anesthesia and Resuscitation Department directed by Anna Monardo, involved over 120 students in the three days of study, giving them the opportunity to meet specialists from various sectors of medicine but above all to delve into current issues of transversal interest. The first training event “BLS and rescue techniques” held on 04/17/2024 in the “Ferrante del Giovanni Paolo II” room saw the participation of the children of the fourth year of high school attending the second year of the Biomedical course who, accompanied by Prof. Colacino, attended the course held by Dr. Galeno, the anesthesiologist Dr. Perricelli and the nurse Roberto Falvo, member of the Training Center 21 Emerform.

The team illustrated the basic principles of first aid techniques for patients in cardiac arrest, unblocking the airways in the event of suffocation and the use of the semi-automatic defibrillator. During the lesson, divided into a theoretical and a practical part, the students had the opportunity to practice on both adult and pediatric mannequins, set up for this purpose. On the second training day held at the “F. Fiorentino” on April 20th, the very delicate topic of the most common “substances of abuse” such as alcohol, drugs and smoking was addressed. “Alcohol abuse – concludes the note – is very widespread among young people and is one of the main risk factors for disease, disability and premature mortality in the world. It represents the first addiction-inducing substance with a high social impact, being characterized as a toxic, carcinogenic, caloric substance, and often associated with other addictions to substances and behaviors”.

Smoking addiction was the other burning topic addressed: “proven cause of neoplastic, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, smoking represents one of the biggest public health problems worldwide. An emerging phenomenon is the consumption of new products containing nicotine, such as those with heated tobacco and the electronic cigarette, also widespread among the young population due to their high ability to induce addiction. Finally, particular attention was paid to narcotic substances, especially the latest generation, sneaky and insidious ones “soft” drugs as they all create addiction and serious damage to health, whether they are of natural or synthetic origin. There are various reasons that lead to starting them: from the “high” (a sort of search for extreme pleasure) to the need not to feel different. from the pack, to the desire for oblivion to erase anxieties and worries”.

In the last meeting on the 22nd, they say, “the very delicate topic of “Organ Donation” was addressed, on which many young people are asked to express themselves, already at the age of eighteen, when they apply for an Electronic Identity Card. Dr. Galeno explained what the clinical and instrumental criteria adopted to achieve organ donation are, while Dr. Mariateresa Caruso, anesthetist and resuscitator, bringing some touching testimonies to the attention of the very young students, highlighted the role of the resuscitators who is to intervene even in the most desperate situations to try to save human lives, without neglecting any attempt, before arriving at organ donation. On the importance of these training and information seminars, all very engaging and followed by the students with shared attention. Director Nicolantonio Cutuli focused on it, warmly thanking Dr. Galeno and the entire team of doctors involved for their professional availability, underlining its usefulness for the new generations in order to better understand the world around them by making conscious choices such as that of organ donation, in which dialogue with experts in the sector is essential to unravel doubts and fears linked precisely to misinformation”. ‘Organ donation – concludes Director Cutuli – is man’s greatest act of generosity because it gives hope of life to those who still have the chance to embrace it again’.
