“The Cadornas between army and politics” with Gianpiero Goffi

Monday 29 April, at 4.30pm, in the conference room of the Cremonese Philodrammatic Societyfor the cycle of cultural meetings of theUniversity of the Third Age and Free Time “Luigi Grande” APS, Gianpiero Goffi will give a report on “The Cadornas between army and politics”.

From time to time, the dispute of a toponymic as well as historical nature arises again, involving Cremona and other Italian cities, one of which, Udine, seat of the supreme command of the Armed Forces during the Great War 1915-18, took steps to cross out the name of the Marshal of Italy Luigi Cadorna (1850-1928) from his street directory.

In any case the history of Cadornaan ancient Lombard-Piedmontese family, originally from Pallanza (Verbania) on Lake Maggiore, of Catholic tradition, does not end with the figure of the controversial general who, in the post-war period, composed two works to defend himself from the accusations that were and are leveled against him .

In the last two centuries, from the Risorgimento to the War of Liberation, at least three others have been encountered Cadorna among the protagonists of Italian military or political life: Carlo Cadorna (1809-1891), who was Minister of the Interior of the Kingdom of Italy with the government Menabrea after having been president of the Chamber of the Kingdom of Sardinia; Raffaele Cadorna senior (1815-1897), general who linked his name, among other things, to the Porta Pia breach of 1870; and finally Raffaele Cadorna junior (1889-1973) who became commander of the Freedom Volunteer Corps during the Resistance in Northern Italy.
