TRIESTE – She had been targeted by a man who had seen her at the counter where she worked and who for months forced her to suffer a series of harassing and persecutory behaviors such as to arouse a permanent state of anxiety and fear for her own safety. Therefore the woman filed a complaint with the local police who were able to start the investigation. The man, a 58-year-old EU foreigner, had identified the victim’s various work locations and systematically showed up there during her shifts, stopping to stare at her, giving her notes with harassing and invasive phrases and following her when she left work. The woman had therefore changed her habits and had colleagues or acquaintances accompany her home for fear that she might find out where she lived. A real nightmare.

The complaint was immediately taken into account and the investigations made it possible to collect sufficient evidence for the Judicial Authority to issue a ban on the man from approaching the victim. The precautionary measure also included the ban on frequenting the woman’s usual places, including workplaces, and the obligation to wear the electronic bracelet, recently introduced to protect the victims. As soon as the man reappeared in the office where the woman was – a few days ago – the officers were able to notify him of the approach ban which became enforceable. If he were to violate it, mandatory arrest is foreseen in flagrante delicto.
