Asti and April 25th: «The partisan bands were an experiment in democracy»

“An experiment in democracy, in which the sense of solidarity was well welded to that of common responsibility: the mistake of one could cost the lives of all”. A profound homage to the partisan bands that Laurana Lajolo, official speaker on April 25th in Asti, paid in Piazza San Secondo where the ceremony commemorating the anniversary of the Liberation was held.

With a thought also for women: «Many of them knew for the first time the taste of emancipation and rights, they understood that they could become protagonists of their destiny, even if at the cost of their lives and this awareness would have brought them the right to vote.”

And there was no lack of a precise and current political position: «On behalf of the entire Anpi I express my opposition to the proposal for a premiership which breaks the balance of power of the State strongly desired and foreseen by our Constitution which, I remind you, is the result of the Resistance and of national pacification. But it was also written to prevent any authoritarianism, sovereignism and territorial differences: those who have signed up for public positions and have the duty to abide by these principles should remember this every moment.”

An oration, that of Laurana Lajolo, constructed almost as a “review” lesson of the main articles of the Constitution and the names of those who gave their lives in those terrible years to give us freedom of thought and life.

With a moment of great emotion when, remembering that in a few days the 80th anniversary of the death of the Way Assauto worker Remo Dovano for having put up the posters praising the May Day celebrations, he read a passage from the last letter which the man sent to his girlfriend before being shot at the Sessant shooting gallery “I am sending you these last red roses which will soon become many drops of blood. But know that I die peacefully.”

Before her speech, that of Valeria Sollazzo, on behalf of the women of “Non una di meno” and dedicated to Marisa Ombra and the women of the Resistance. He remembered the 21 Constituent Mothers who, despite the different parties they belonged to, united to guarantee women’s rights.

The speech by Guido Cardello, vice president of the Anpi of Asti, was passionate and he reiterated some fundamental points: «Anti-fascism is not divisive and is not a crime» referring to the imprisonment of Ilaria Salis in Hungary accused of injuring some policemen. «An accusation, if proven, which in Italy would be judged by the Justice of the Peace and does not provide for precautionary measures – said Cardello – this is also anti-fascism».

And then, inviting everyone to reflect on the principles that founded the Resistance and on the boys and young people who then gave their lives for freedom, he read some passages from the now well-known monologue of the writer Antonio Scurati which Rai did not want to broadcast raising a political case.
