PERUGIA Perugia’s history is full of play-offs in all categories, but to find a victory for the Griffins in a playoff you have to go back to the promotion to Serie A obtained in ’97-98 in Reggio Emilia against Torino.
Since then only disappointments, the list is long starting from the interdivisional play-off with Fiorentina in 2003-2004, the playoff final with Torino for Serie A in 2004-2005, the playoff semi-final with Ancona for Serie B in 2007-2008 , the playoff semi-final with Pisa for Serie B in 2012-2013, the preliminary playoff round with Pescara for Serie A 2014-2015, the playoff semi-final with Benevento for Serie A 2016-2017, the preliminary playoff round with Venezia for Serie A 2017-2018, the preliminary playoff round with Verona for the A 2018-2019, the playout to stay in B with Pescara 2019-2020, the preliminary playoff for the A with Brescia in 2021-2022. Upon closer inspection, all comparisons in series A and B, while in series C tradition speaks of a victory in the only play-off played so far, in Foggia with Acireale in ’92-93, which remained in the popular imagination for the success against field in front of 18,000 Perugians and less for the subsequent revocation in court. But only on one occasion did Perugia have to face an entire month full of matches as could happen to them if they were to advance in the upcoming Serie C playoffs. The reference is to the endless play-offs to stay in Serie B won by the Griffins of Guido Mazzetti and Lino Spagnoli in the summer of 1967.
If the playoffs are starting to be a marathon that involves the participation of 28 teams (21 already in the first phase and group playoffs, gradually the others in the national phase and in the Final Four) who will compete every three days between May 7th and on 9 June to decree the fourth promotion to Serie B, what happened at the end of the ’67-68 championship comes very close. Assigned to a sort of extended playout, a play-off round with Messina, Lecco, Genoa and Venice to decree two relegations to the third series, the Perugia of the various Dugini, Montenovo, Azzali, Polentes, Balestrieri, Piccioni and Mainardi on the neutral pitches of Caserta and Bologna won against Messina (3-0) and Lecco (2-1), drew with Genoa (1-1) and lost against Venice (3-0) finishing on a par with Genoa, Lecco and Venice. Which made it necessary to play another group in which Perugia triumphed this time, defeating Genoa (2-0), drawing with Lecco (0-0) and beating Venezia 2-1, on 21 July 1968 in Bologna with goals from Balstrieri and Dugini, obtaining a hard-fought but deserved salvation among the cadets.
May it be a good omen for the griffins, who yesterday trained behind closed doors inside the Curi, where the coach Formisano had the public’s chants of incitement played over the loudspeakers to help them acclimate to the fiery climate that awaits them. Full group except for Seghetti and Angella who are recovering. After the Sunday break we will return to work on Monday, from Tuesday off to the retreat in Cascia.
