“The history of Italy is marked by moments of courage”

“April 25th is and must be called the Liberation Day. Not of freedom. The first expresses the action of extreme sacrifice of partisans and civilians massacred by the fascists. The second is a goal achieved to be defended with our Constitution which did not come to us from heaven. It wasn’t given to us but we earned it.” The center-left candidate Fabio Anselmo speaks.

“Today we are required to deal with huge issues – continued the lawyer – which call into question these, albeit troubled, 79 years of freedom and democracy. We must deal with the climate of war which involves the increase in military spending to the detriment of welfare and healthcare, with tragedies such as those which saw Ukraine attacked by Russia and with the terrible and disproportionate retaliation of the Israeli government towards the Palestinian people . On the internal level, the right-wing government wants to reduce Parliament and the President of the Republic to paper-pushers with no role through the institution of the premiership while disarticulating Italy between rich and poor regions with the law on autonomy”.

Anselmo added that “it’s not enough: we go from censorship of divergent positions, like the recent one against Antonio Scurati, to the attempt to muzzle the press and non-aligned intellectuals with reckless complaints, denunciations, purchase of newspapers by associates, laws that increase the penalties for journalists guilty of bringing to light documents that should remain hidden from the public opinion. The doors of the clinics are opened to associations whose aim is to prevent women from deciding about their lives and bodies in freedom and conscience, making an already bitter moment even more difficult.”

Hence the reflection that “in this context, celebrating April 25th takes on an even deeper meaning. It is an opportunity to reflect on the importance of freedom, democracy and the values of solidarity and equality that have inspired the partisan struggle for the freedom of Italy. It is a moment to reaffirm the commitment to defend human rights, freedom of expression and respect for diversity.”

The candidate concluded that “April 25 reminds us that the history of Italy is marked by moments of courage, resistance and solidarity. It is a day to honor those who have sacrificed so much to ensure a better future for subsequent generations and to renew our commitment to defend the values of freedom and democracy that are at the heart of our identity and the constitutional pact.”
