25 April: Constitutional values remembered in Potenza and Matera

POTENZA, 25 APR – The values of the Constitution – and the need for their “realization” – were at the center of the Liberation Day in Potenza and Matera, where this morning no protest banners were seen nor polemical slogans were heard. In Potenza, the 79th anniversary of 25 April 1945 – celebrated in front of the Monument to the fallen in the First World War – began with the intervention of the student representatives, Simone Carcuro and Fabrizio Manna, who – to remember the struggle of the Italians ” against the worst dictatorship in history” – they read a passage from a speech to young people given by Piero Calamandrei (1889-1956). Then spoke the president of the Province, Christian Giordano, the mayor of the capital, Mario Guarente, the regional councilor Cosimo Latronico and the prefect, Michele Campanaro, who recalled some episodes of resistance to Nazi-fascism which occurred in Southern Italy, also citing some words by Vittorio Foa (1910-2008). The demonstration also followed a similar pattern in Matera: the speech by the ANPI representative repeatedly underlined the need to “vigilate” against the dangers to democracy. Other ceremonies are scheduled in various municipalities of Basilicata: debates and theatrical performances are also planned in the afternoon. (HANDLE).
