This morning, April 25, the institutional ceremonies organized by the Municipality of Sassari for the 79th anniversary of the Liberation took place first in Piazza del Comune and then in the courtyard of Palazzo Ducale.

Once the procession organized by the ANPI arrived, led by the “Luigi Canepa” band, in the town square, the first part of the official celebrations began, with the commemorative speeches given by the prefect. Grazia La Fauciby the president of the Sassari section of the Anpi, Thomas Arras and the mayor Nanni Campus. This year too, as in 2023, there were interventions by two students from the city’s secondary schools who took part in the “Auschwitz Reminder” project, promoted by Arci and the Deina association and financially supported by the municipal administration , who brought their testimony after the experience lived with other young people from all over Italy in what was the concentration camp which became a symbol of the horrors of war and the extermination of the Jewish people. Already on the occasion of Remembrance Day, January 27, the municipal administration had invited some of them to speak during the solemn session of the municipal council.

Mayor Campus, in his speech he recalled how “today, at the end of my second mandate, for the last time I have the honor of representing our City for you and with you in the celebration of Liberation Day. An anniversary that is the celebration of Freedom for everyone.
Freedom as an absolute, precious good. Freedom as a gift that has come to us today through the sacrifice of thousands of soldiers and civilians: Catholics, communists, monarchists, Jews who fought and died to conquer it, united in the struggle for liberation from the German occupation and the fascist dictatorship.
Dead that we must honor because it is from their sacrifice that our democracy was born.
Freedom and democracy that today we take for granted but we see in too many parts of the world that women and men still have to die to defend their freedom.
Unfortunately, this is the third year that the anniversary of Liberation Day takes place while Europe, our Europe, continues to be shaken by the Russian invasion of Ukraine with the impressive drama of the armed clashes and bombings on cities and villages and while our consciences, for too many dramatic months now, have been further shocked by the blood, especially of unarmed civilians, which has been shed and is still being shed, with tragic daily life, in Israel and Palestine.
It is in the face of these tragedies that we must feel the meaning of this celebration even more.”
