69 poplar trees to be felled in via Galilei. Spadoni: “It serves as a lesson”

“As is known, plants have their own life and are subject to diseases as in the case of the poplar trees on the Via Galilei cycle path, where the situation is so serious for the general safety of people that only through felling can the problem be resolved emerging problem. It involves cutting down 69 poplar trees considered dangerous for public safety and in this respect I think it is difficult to express objections or criticisms, because the health and safety of citizens comes before anything else”.

But the topic in question lends itself to some general considerations according to one of the doyens of local politics.

“The Municipality has long created – rightly – a dense network of cycle paths flanked by trees or shrubs” notes Gianfranco Spadoni, for Lista per Ravenna. “The ordinary maintenance of these plants – as well as the slopes – is reduced to a minimum and this certainly affects the normal conditions of the vegetation. For long stretches you can see dry shrubs and plants, lacking the minimum conditions of liveability due, as we said, to the lack of maintenance but also to the lack of watering and minimal care. With these assumptions it seems really difficult to conserve the precious green heritage, the result of which is there for all to see. Furthermore, the tree species to be placed alongside the slopes should be selected more carefully to avoid frequent removals. At this point, however, we are confident in the planting of new tree varieties to compensate for the felling of the 69 poplar trees which, in good conditions, could reach 200 years of life”.
