VENICE – Again thefts in the Campo dei Frari area. This time the one to be targeted “Carartea ai Frari” with a hit carried out on Tuesday night at 11.40pm; third attempt, after two failures, to enter the shop, in March and December. The thief, after having forced entry, probably with a drill, headed towards the cash register steal a loot of around 5 euros. Much higher, however, are the damage costs for the shop owners: 500 euros to change the lock, a day of work lost and the cost of heating raised to the maximum while the windows remain open to let the smoke out. In fact, the alarm system installed after the second attempt by the criminals to enter, once activated, releases smoke bombs that hinder the criminals. It was the smoke that attracted the attention of the employees of the Koenji tavern, opposite the shop, who called the fire brigade at 11.40pm. A dozen policemen, firefighters and urban police rushed to the scene and made sure to secure the goods and wait for the owners. «The next step after the alarm and the cameras? The suggestions they gave me were to put the open cash register in the window and to remove the hours – says Elisabetta Casaburri, the owner of the crafts shop – But I have to communicate the working hours to my customers, plus I remember which was almost midnight. It’s rare that there is anyone inside at that time to spend the money on repairs.” In addition to the accommodation costs, there are also those for the security system, which consists, in the case of Verisure, in the initial cost of 400 euros and 50 euros per month. «We need more control in the area. If the consequence for the criminals is to have a bit of smoke in their faces, this story will continue.”

THE LONG LIST

However, the stationery shop is not the only place in Calle Larga to suffer such damage, the “Tappezzeria del Mas” was also targeted by thieves, who attempted to force the door in March. The owner filed a complaint against unknown persons, the only way to indicate criminal activities in the area. Also in March it happened to a warehouse with detergents and towels, probably belonging to a B&B, in Calle del Cristo in front of the “La Bauta” mask workshop, which in turn in December found the glass door smashed and a trail of blood that reached the chest. Always La Bauta, but this time his atelier located a few steps away from Campo San Tomà, saw its wooden door destroyed in February; goods intact and equipment present. The list continues with the Adagio bar in Campo dei Frari, where in February there was an attempted theft, which however was unsuccessful due to the railings positioned on the window after the first theft which occurred in October. Here too the loot was only the cash fund. Moving to Calle San Rocco, we find the “Nina” clothing store, whose padlock, installed after three break-in attempts, disappeared 10 days ago, raising fears of a new episode, and the “New Jolly Style” beauty center and hairdresser, robbed of its worker tips in November and again in January. Nobody seems to be safe, the “Dersuit” bar in Campo dei Frari saw its door forced for the last time in November, the “All’Angolo” bacaro for the third time between September and October. The latter states that so far the damage costs for repairing the lock and shatterproof glass door amount to 10,000 euros.
