L’AQUILA – Today we return to Italy to celebrate the day of liberation from Nazi-fascism. April 25th is considered a symbolic date because in 1945 it coincided with the beginning of the retreat by the soldiers of Nazi Germany and the fascist soldiers of the Republic of Salò from the cities of Turin and Milan, after the population had rebelled and the partisans they had organized a coordinated plan to regain control of the cities. Liberation Day was established on 22 April 1946 by the provisional Italian government, led by Alcide De Gasperi.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni will remain in Rome to participate in the ceremony at the Altare della Patria with the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella and the presidents of the Senate Ignazio la Russa and of the Chamber Lorenzo Fontana.
For the Head of State, the memory of the Liberation will continue in a symbolic place of the Nazi-fascist massacres: Civitella Valdichiana, in the Arezzo area, where on 29 June 1944 244 people were killed. Sergio Mattarella said a year ago: the Italian Republic is “founded on the Constitution, daughter of the anti-fascist struggle”, and he spoke in Boves, symbol of the first Nazi massacre, and then he closed his speech from the municipal theater of Cuneo by chanting: “Now and always Resistence”.

But it will also be an April 25th marked by tensions, with places even more divided this year by the conflict in the Middle East. In Rome the security plan has already come to life. The entire area of Porta San Paolo, a symbolic place of the Roman resistance, will be under the lens, where today at 8 am the Jewish Brigade will lay a wreath of flowers. Around two hundred people are expected, including prominent members of the community. And at the same time, a few meters away, Palestinian students, movements, antagonists and university collectives met for an “anti-fascist and anti-Zionist” demonstration.

“Against every form of colonialism, alongside the Fedayeen who fight the Zionist occupier, for the liberation of Palestine. Now and always resistance” underlined by the Palestinian student movement, launching the mobilization. And the police will pay maximum attention to this coincidence to avoid tensions and violent protests. Around two thousand participants are expected, however, in the traditional Anpi procession which will start at 10 from Largo Bompiani and arrive at Porta San Paolo, where a stage will be set up for speeches, including that of Roberto Salis. An event in which the Jewish community will not participate, as has already happened for some years. In the capital there will always be the procession of the ‘Free Now, Free Again’ movements in the morning which from Villa Gordiani will cross the streets of Centocelle and arrive at Quarticciolo.

There will also be high attention in Milan where the national demonstration will, as always, be opened by deportees and anti-fascist brigades, including the Jewish one which in recent years has almost always been the subject of protests and which, in light of the situation in Gaza, this year promises to be more massive. Behind the partisans the banner ‘Cease fire everywhere’ will be displayed, which has created quite a bit of controversy, then the trade unions, the political forces such as the Democratic Party present with the secretary Elly Schlein, the various associations and the Palestinian community. The Palestinian association of Italy promises to bring around five thousand people to the streets. The young Palestinians, however, will meet in Piazza Duomo at 1.30 pm with the intention, together with some social centers and antagonistic realities, to fill the space in which the event ends with Palestinian flags and “kufiyye and all possible Palestinian symbols”. procession with the final rallies. The writer could also take the stage Antonio Scurati to read the monologue canceled by Rai. The plan developed by the Police Headquarters guarantees safety. A device that also takes into account the presentation, at the Institute for the Blind a few hundred meters away from the procession, of the book by the secretary of the League and the deputy prime minister Matteo Salvini. And university movements after yesterday’s riots in Turin are also under the spotlight in these hours.

In a question time in the Chamber the Minister of the Interior Matteo Piantedosi he underlined that the “profitable and constant” dialogue between the police forces and university institutions has made it possible to ensure “excellent levels of security” so far. The head of the Interior Ministry, however, recalled that a “pillar” of the government’s bill on security, being examined by the Constitutional Affairs commission of the Chamber, “is dedicated to the protection of police operators during the performance of their duties. These are measures, especially the latter, which I strongly wanted and which I believe can no longer be postponed, as yesterday’s events in Turin demonstrate”.
