Appointments throughout the morning, from the cemetery to the Municipality, up to the War Memorial
ALEXANDRIA – Celebrations of 25 Apriltoday, in Alessandria, which will celebrate the 79th anniversary of the Liberation in memory of the enormous sacrifice made to make Italy one Free and democratic country. Founded on the principles solemnly sanctioned by the Constitutional Charter.
The meaning of this primary National holiday – to use the president’s words Sergio Mattarella during the official speech last year – is to deeply grasp the nature of «celebration of Italian identity, rediscovered and refounded after fascism”. Understanding how much the Resistance and the Liberation Struggle were «first and foremost “moral” revolt of patriots against fascism to affirm national redemption”.
Liberation, the program
The program for today is rich.
- 9 am – Monumental Urban Cemetery of Alessandria. Laying of a laurel wreath at the “Field of Glory” – Shrine of the Fallen for Freedom.
- 9.30 am – Cathedral of St. Peter the Apostle, Piazza Giovanni XXIII, Alessandria. Eucharistic celebration officiated by Monsignor Guido Gallese, bishop of Alessandria, in suffrage of the fallen Partisans. Following, formation of the procession – accompanied by the Civica Banda Musicale “G. Cantone” of Alessandria – and transfer to Palazzo Ghilini, seat of the Prefecture and Province of Alessandria.
- 10.15 am – Hallway of Palazzo Ghilini, seat of the Prefecture and Province of Alessandria. Reading of the text of the Act of surrender of the Nazi-fascist armed forces in Alessandria signed at Palazzo Ghilini on April 28, 1945. Following, formation of the procession – accompanied by the Civica Banda Musicale “G. Cantone” – and transfer to the Palazzo di Città.
- 10.30 am – Entrance hall of the City Palace of Alessandria. Laying of a laurel wreath in memory of those fallen for freedom. Afterwards, the procession resumes with the following route: Piazza della Libertà, Via dei Martiri, Corso Roma, Corso Crimea, Corso Crimea public gardens.
- 11 o’clock – War Memorial – Public Gardens in Corso Crimea. Deployment of the joint honor guard. Entry into the Labari and Gonfaloni array. Flag raising ceremony. Honors to the Fallen and laying of a laurel wreath at the Monument. Greetings by Dario Gemma (president of the Anpi Alessandria municipal section), the president of the Province of Alessandria and the mayor of the City of Alessandria. Followed by official speech by Angelo d’Orsi, historian and journalist, former Professor of History of Political Thought at the University of Turin. Reading of the motivation for the Gold Medal for Military Valor awarded in 1996 to the Banner of the Province of Alessandria for the sacrifices of its populations and for the partisan activity of its communities.
The laurel wreaths
Not only. During the day, laurel wreaths will also be placed at the War Memorial of Casalbagliano and Cantalupo. And at the plaque in memory of Luiz Lopes Dornelles, pilot of the 1st Fighter Group of the Brazilian Air Force in Italy, shot down on 26 April 1945 near the current site of the “G. Galilei” (Bregola 49).
Finally, from 22 April to 3 May the “Francesca Calvo” civic library (piazza Vittorio Veneto 1), in collaboration with Asm Costruire Insieme, as part of the celebrations for the Anniversary of the Liberation, will propose a thematic exhibition of editorial news on the Resistance and Liberation from nazi-fascism.
