«Geothermal energy alongside hydroelectric, photovoltaic, wind and new nuclear power: they are the future for de-carbonization». The day after the «Conference of scientific and space workers and agricultural experts 2024» at the Valentino Castle, the Minister of the Environment and Energy Security, Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, participates in the Readers’ Circle at the table on geothermal energy. And he looks to the G7 in Venaria Reale: «This is a bridge moment with respect to Cop 28 and Cop 29 if we want the Paris objectives and the decarbonisation actions at a global level, where the role of the seven most industrialized countries has a significant weight, in addition to what is the value of the number. And naturally we intend to close with objectives to pursue and also bring to the Cop field.”

The difficult morning in Turin: pro-Palestine march and traffic paralyzed in the centre: “Zionists out of the University”

After yesterday’s tensions at the pro-Palestine march, the minister does not fear repercussions for the demonstrations already announced for this weekend: «I hope there is the common sense to understand that the objectives of the G7 are not only those of peace, but also of achieving important goals for the new generations. Seniors must make their contribution.” On nuclear power, «Italy is making progress – assures the minister – on the research and experimentation front. We have a strong knowledge of the sector, we are not manufacturers but we are carefully evaluating it at a national level. The platform for sustainable nuclear power is the one that must not only provide the scenario but also the path, including the legal one, to be equipped and enter, in my belief, into the future production of nuclear energy, naturally with those that are the new generation».

Regarding the management of extreme events, such as the flood in Emilia Romagna almost a year ago, “Italy is in a very difficult situation”, recognizes Pichetto. And he explains: «Despite the fact that there is a strong abundance of water, climate change leads to this situation: it rains a quarter of the days less and the quantity of water is always the same». Facilities are missing. “It’s been at least forty years since any infrastructure has been built to keep the water safe”, he adds. But «there is an adaptation plan to climate change which indicates the actions that must lead us to collect water in the shortest possible time when too much falls – he explains -: today we only collect 11% of rainwater , while countries like Spain collect 37%.” Even on the invaded level “there is a bureaucratic decision-making process that is not very short”.
