TREND 25 APRIL – 2 MAY 2024

In recent days the cold phase characterized by arctic currents from the north has also brought snowfall down to low altitude, at times in the plains between Cuneo and southern Asti, while up to 50 cm has fallen at low altitude between the Maritime/Ligurian Alps and the Apennines; all together with local late frosts with damage to the crops, with a decidedly early vegetative period for the period due to the hot phase in the middle of the month.

Observing the trend for the next few days, we note the conclusion of the phase characterized by below average temperatures, thanks to a change in air masses that will gradually take place over the next weekend: the cold Arctic circulation will in fact be gradually replaced by milder currents of Atlantic origins, which will however also bring widespread precipitation to the north-west, initially snowy even at medium-low altitudes due to the cold present in the lower layers. After a day on Thursday 25th characterized by sun and cool temperatures, the first changes will be noticed on Friday with increasing clouds and rainfall especially in upper Piedmont and the south-eastern valleys of the Aosta Valley (Champorcher and Gressoney first and foremost, followed from Ayas and Valtournenche), accompanied by a still low snow level, between approximately 1300 and 1600 m. All due to a vast depressionary circulation that will persist in Western Europe:

It will also influence the weather between next Saturday and Sunday, with at times intense rainfall especially between Saturday afternoon/evening and Sunday until the central hours in the band between Canavese, Valle d’Aosta (especially south-eastern) and VCO. During this second passage we will also see more widespread rainfall on the plains and in southern Piedmont in general. On Sunday, however, we will notice the change in air masses, as the cold in the valleys will now be exhausted and the snow level will be around 1800-2000 m, at times even higher in the valleys most exposed to the warm pull from the south.

Monday will probably be a day of transition, gray but without noteworthy phenomena, while new bad weather could affect the north-west around May 1st, thanks to a new drop descending from the north-west. We’ll stop here for today, but what the models show this evening is a return to temperature values around the average for the period, together with rain in the plains and snowfall from medium altitudes in the mountains.
