In three years the quantity of water injected into the network by Iren has decreased by 2 million cubic meters in our province and by 13 at group level. Last year, network losses were reduced to below 22%.
REGGIO EMILIA – Reducing water losses to 20% at group level and 15% in the province of Reggio: this is the objective that Iren aims to achieve in 2030 to combat a phenomenon that causes serious environmental problems. According to the Istat report released a few weeks ago, in 2022 at a national level, 42.4% of the water injected into the network was lost. The Iren group’s figure is significantly better: 31.2%, reduced to 30% in 2023.
But the territorial differences are notable, even within the same group. Water losses in 2022 were equal to 37.1% in Parma, but fell to 22.4% in Piacenza. In the province of Reggio they stood at 23.5% and last year they further dropped to 21.9%. In the capital municipality the percentage is 18.9%. However, 2030 is not far away and it is necessary to invest massively in the maintenance and renewal of networks to achieve the set objectives. This is what is being done, with already tangible results. In three years, between 2020 and 2022, the quantity of water injected into the network by Iren decreased by 13 million cubic metres. In the province of Reggio the drop was almost 2 million, falling below the threshold of 44 million cubic metres.
In 2022 alone, 35 million euros were invested in our province for the laying of new pipelines and for the maintenance of the 5 thousand kilometers of the aqueduct and sewerage network. Without forgetting that more than ten years ago, in 2012, network losses in the Reggio Emilia area were equal to 20%.
