Moments of tension at the Potenza hospital, enraged users lash out against the Cup staff

On April 23, at the cash counters of the San Carlo hospital in Potenza, three employees of the company that manages the auxiliary and cash service were attacked by some users who first acted verbally and then they tried to force entry to the cash office despite the intervention of the security guards. By sheer luck they didn’t manage to break the windows of the stations. The terrified workers were in fact kidnapped by the angry crowd, and forced by the health management to reopen the branches while continuing to suffer verbal violence and threats. The secretaries of Filcams Cgil and Filcom Basilicata, Michele Sannazzaro and Donato Rosa, recount what happened. The users’ reaction was apparently triggered by the fact that after a long wait they were told that, rightly, working hours were over.

The episode – explain the two trade unionists – occurred because, as repeatedly denounced by the union, the staff is insufficient and the service is undersized in the face of the notable influx of users who turn to the cash desks of the San Carlo hospital to make reservations, service that the regional CUP should carry out.

“On several occasions – say Sannazzaro and Rosa – we have reported the situation, turning to the Prefecture where we have formulated proposals aimed at resolving this problem. We strongly condemn this unjustified violence against workers who carry out their own activities and have no responsibility for the disservices due to the continuous cuts in contracts for outsourced services and we warn the hospital management to immediately resolve this situation by immediately providing a surveillance service that guarantees the safety of workers”. For these reasons, Filcams Cgil of Potenza and Filcom Basilicata proclaim the state of workers’ unrest and ask the prefect for a meeting. If there is no response, the unions will call for a workers’ strike.
