Vittoria, homage to Countess Vittoria Colonna, founder of the city

Homage to Countess Vittoria Colonna, founder of the city.

On the anniversary of the foundation of Vittoria, the city remembered the Countess of Modica who was also Duchess of Medina de Rioseco in 1606 obtained from the King of Spainthe “royal privilege” for the foundation of a new city, or rather for the reconstruction of the ancient Camarina.

The mortal remains returned to Victoria from Spain in 1990

The mortal remains of Vittoria Colonna (or part of them) returned to Vittoria in 1990 and were buried in a niche in the side altar of the Basilica of San Giovanni Battista.

There, this morning, the mayor Francesco Aiello, with representatives of the council and the vice president of the city council, Rosetta Noto, went to lay a wreath in front of his tombstone. This was followed by the celebration of mass, presided over by the parish priest, Don Salvatore Converso.

The municipal theatre, in neoclassical style, built in 1863, was dedicated to Vittoria Colonna. A bust of the Countess of Modica can also be found in the Villa Comunale.
