There is still a lot to do and a municipality alone can hardly resolve the situation. The Equal Pay Day, however, brought the delicate issue of the pay imbalance (and not only) between men and women in Italy back to the foreground. The Democratic Party of Laives, involved in collecting signatures from the allied PSI and Laives al Centro lists, wanted to expand the petition by also adding one in support of equal pay. All with a precise concrete commitment also included in the electoral campaign. «We want – explains the secretary Mauro Mazzio – let us personally promote gender equity certifications. In concrete terms, the Municipality would be diligent in involving local businesses in meeting the requirements to obtain it. It would be a way to make concrete measures to pay attention to women’s employment and wages by sharing principles that are fundamental for everyone. It would also be a way to provide our companies with a precious element of additional quality and distinction.»
Furthermore, the commitment does not stop there. «In the coalition program there are several specific measures to combat wage inequality and, more generally, help all women” confirms mayoral candidate Sara Endrizzi. “First of all we are already working to improve the availability of nursery schools in the municipal area also through specific agreements with the many companies present in Laives. Furthermore, support for children must be strengthened by encouraging youth centers and activities for children and teenagers.» The training aspect is not secondary. «With the equal opportunities committee we intend to launch specific cultural training courses. In order to remove all women from the risks of economic dependence, which are unfortunately still too widespread, economic management courses will be activated. Too often, economic dependence is a cage from which it is difficult to escape. Then there are technical paths in specific sectors that can be achieved by collaborating with trade associations of artisans or traders. Without forgetting, finally, paths of liberation from the exclusive obligation of care, thus enhancing and making responsible the role of fathers.»
