Analysis and perspectives in water resources management. The report on the technical working table held in Taranto on the sustainable management of water in Puglia and Euro-Mediterranean scenarios is available

TARANTO – 23 April 2024 – Puglia has only 20% indigenous sources of water but has an excellent supply system. This is the data that emerges from the “Water Manifesto”, the new report on the technical work table dedicated to sustainable management of water resources in Puglia and in the Euro-Mediterranean context.

The initiative, which falls within the scope of Re-think Tarantowas promoted by the Strategic Regional Agency ASSET Puglia and organized by Round in March at Palazzo Amati in Taranto.

The primary objective of the roundtable concerned the exhaustive and integrated analysis of the technical aspects related to the management of water resources from multiple perspectives, thanks to the involvement of public and private institutions in the sector, through an in-depth exploration of the supply chains: concerning both drinking water and those relating to irrigation, with particular attention to related impacts. The gap between supply and demand for water was examined, considering the impacts resulting from climate changeand innovative techniques for the reuse of non-conventional water, such as wastewater or drainage, were presented.

Within the vast panorama of natural resources that characterize Puglia, water therefore emerges as an element of fundamental importance, vital for life and development.

Its essentiality is particularly reflected in the economies of the countries of the Mediterranean area and in the daily life of communities, which find themselves facing recurring periods of Drought which place the water issue at the center of the challenges and opportunities that must be responded to in a systemic manner and through cooperation projects.

“We were very happy to have been able to organize this working table” commented Francesco CastellanoCEO and Founder of Round. “Sustainable water management is an increasingly crucial issue in Italy and around the world, and Puglia is a virtuous example. We hope that the report we have developed will be of help and inspiration to all those who want to approach this topic.”

The day opened with greetings and thanks from Francesco CastellanoCEO and founder of Tondo, representing the extraordinary commissioner of ASSET Salvatore Refolo the officials intervened Olga Guarnieri And Antonella Carusofollowed by the industrial director of the Aqueduct Pugliese Antonio De Leothe manager of the Water Resources section of the Puglia Region Andrea Zottithe manager of the IRSA-CNR of Taranto Antonella Magda Di Leothe professor. Leonardo Damianidirector of DICATECh of the Polytechnic of Bari, the researcher of CIHEAM Bari Daniela D’Agostino, Ramona Mellone official of Confindustria Taranto, Fabio De Palmamanager of TAUW Italia Srl e Sergio Strazzellasole director of SF System Srl

There water intake and purification was the first of the topics addressed, with particular attention to the excellence of the territory and international comparison. The representatives of the institutional bodies present described the water quality standard, the technologies for taking and supplying the available water sources and the treatment methods.

The second macro-theme addressed was water distribution, both drinkable and for corporate and agricultural use. The speakers were invited to focus on aspects relating to water demand and the consequent coverage and efficiency of distribution systems, and the monitoring of the water network with regard to agricultural activities. A further theme introduced was that of waste water and its reuse with regard to the sewage system, treatment plants and related technologies for reuse in agriculture. Finally, the topic of Water governance and of theimplementation of innovations: a very complex area, in which the different uses and different functions of the resource coexist, in each one it is necessary to implement synergistic strategies between the different stakeholders and institutional levels, to harmonize and simplify the implementation tools.

“Puglia is a region that has been facing the problem for centuries, so much so that it has developed a know-how of knowledge and expertise that has placed it at the forefront even during emergency situations.” So he comments Salvatore Refolocommissioner ofASSETS “The technical table was an excellent opportunity to connect on the water resource management system in Puglia with a look at Europe and in particular the Mediterranean, for possible cooperation scenarios useful for tackling the challenges linked to water scarcity , as an objective to be achieved on one of the main themes in the UN Agenda 2030.”

The technical table on the water supply system in Puglia provided a detailed overview of the challenges and of opportunity which currently characterize the region’s water sector. Several crucial points have emerged which highlight both the current resilience of the system and the challenges to be faced to guarantee the security and quality of water supply in the region. They also look at the Mediterranean area, to explore the points of contact of the challenges to be faced.

The results of the table are illustrated in a reports developed by the Tondo team, who recorded the interventions during the day of the event and subsequently transcribed them, integrating with some premises and contextual information. The report is available free of charge, and can be downloaded from the Tondo website: https://www.tondo.tech/it/divulgazione-e-risorse/report/
