Inter Scudetto in the derby? History of the “pact” between the Inter and Milan curves

In 1981, after the death of a Nerazzurri fan, the leaders of the two fan groups of the time made an agreement not to clash again

The old ultra bosses of Milan and Inter shook hands forty years ago in the face of tragedy, after the death of a 21-year-old Nerazzurri fan just outside San Siro. Since then the curves have no longer clashed seriously, except for a few barbs, and that agreement has become famous as the “non-belligerence pact” among the Milanese. A “treaty of friendship” that has endured since 1981, the year of the first of the three “Mundialito” played at San Siro in the 80s. In the first edition, in addition to Gigi Radice’s Milan and Eugenio Bersellini’s Inter, there were Peñarol, Feyenoord and Santos, but the derby went down in history due to the death of Vittore Palmieri, who was involved in the clashes after the match.

the history of the pact

After his death, which occurred about three months after the match, the two curves made a pact: “No more clashes between us, otherwise we’ll die. Again”. An agreement that will be respected even if the Nerazzurri win the scudetto in Monday’s derby, in a packed San Siro. This “agreement” is one of the longest-standing in Italian football, even if it risked breaking several times due to teasing and misunderstandings. The latest from Federico Dimarco, who after eliminating the Rossoneri in the Champions League semi-final picked up a megaphone and sang a chorus against his rivals: “Chatty AC Milan player…”. The Rossoneri didn’t take it well, so much so that they unfurled a threatening banner under the full-back’s house: “Dimarco think about playing… or we’ll make you swallow your tongue.” All this after a statement from the Rossoneri Curva: “The teasing of the players and the club is one thing, but the chants of derision towards a Curva in the presence of the club are a completely different matter. And with a choir that the Curva Nord has purposely not sung for months.” The matter was resolved within a few days with Dimarco’s apologies and subsequent clarification.

There is therefore respect between the two curves. Marco Ferdico, the ultra leader of Inter, spoke like this to Corriere della Sera regarding this pact, underlining how the leaders of the two curves frequent each other: “There is a non-belligerence pact that has been going on for 40 years. It is a guarantee for everyone, otherwise Milan would be a battlefield.” On Monday evening, if Inter were to win the scudetto, the two curves will not collide. Thanks to that pact stipulated four decades ago.
