The decentralized civil protection functional center of Veneto has issued a warning of hydrogeological and hydraulic criticality, valid from 6pm today, 20 May, until midnight on Wednesday 22 May. The notice decrees a new alert for the arrival of heavy rain in much of the regional territory.
The hydrogeological warning for thunderstorms is yellow in all the Veneto basins.
The weather forecast indicates disturbed weather from today evening and tomorrow with rainfall, including showers or thunderstorms, more consistent and frequent in the mountainous, piedmont and high plain areas with even abundant maximum quantities. And the most intense and widespread phase of the bad weather will be between tonight and late Tuesday afternoon.
As regards the hydraulic criticality, a state of alarm (red) has been decreed in the Alto Brenta-Bacchiglione-Alpone and Basso Brenta-Bacchiglione basins. Pre-alarm status (orange) in the Po, Fissero-Tartaro-CanalBianco and Basso Adige basins and in the Lower Piave, Sile and lagoon drainage basins. State of attention (yellow) in the Piave Pedemontano, Livenza, Lemene and Tagliamento, Adige-Garda and Monti Lessini, Livenza, Lemene and Tagliamento basins.
As regards the hydrogeological criticality, a state of alarm (red) has been decreed in the Alto Brenta-Bacchiglione-Alpone and Basso Brenta-Bacchiglione basins. Pre-alarm state (orange) in all the rest of the regional basins except in the Livenza, Lemene and Tagliamento basins where the state of attention (yellow) is decreed.
On the basis of the expected rainfall and the state of saturation of the soil, it is possible to trigger landslides and rapid flows in the mountain, foothill and hilly sectors of the areas under alert, with the activation of even large-scale phenomena. The backlog of rainwater disposal systems is probable, therefore flooding of underground rooms or underpasses is possible. Furthermore, widespread increases in the levels of the secondary hydrographic network are expected.
The meteorological scenario will be characterized by intense, widespread and rapidly evolving phenomena. In the areas under hydraulic alert, the increase in the levels of the main watercourses relating to the piedmont area will be significant, with the probable exceeding of the second or third hydrometric threshold. In the areas of Lower Brenta-Bacchiglione and Lower Piave, Sile and Basin draining into the lagoon, the critical conditions already in place affecting the secondary hydrographic and reclamation network, the state of imbibition of the embankments particularly stressed by last week’s rains, are underlined. with extremely vulnerable points along the Muson and the Fratta-Frassine-Gorzone system.
«The forecasts indicate the arrival of a new disturbance which, given the intense rains of last week, requires particular attention in some areas of the Veneto – commented the President of the Region Luca Zaia – The forecast bulletins released by the technical structures indicate a red alert in particular in the Lower Veronese, in the Muson area in the province of Padua, in the Vicenza area and the Lower Sile. The warning machine has been reactivated at full capacity and we have deployed all the necessary human and technical resources to deal with the effects of the new rains. We hope that the effects can be limited and that the alarm can be lifted once this further phase of bad weather has passed. However, we ask local institutions and citizens to pay attention to the indications and to monitor the expected weather conditions and effects on the ground. Since last week, civil protection councilor Bottacin has never stopped working, bringing together the Crisis Unit, and always remaining active with all the regional structures for problems relating to flooded areas and damage restoration. I thank him and all the men and women who, in any role and in any capacity, are working to ensure that the machine is in perfect motion even in the event, which we do not hope for, that critical issues arise again.
