Reggio Calabria, an oncology patient

StrettoWeb

A StrettoWeb reader sent us a signed letter regarding a booking for a medical visit at the Gom in Reggio Calabria. Here is the text of the letter: “Like many elderly people I have to check my prostate and to do this I need a transrectal ultrasound. The only place in Reggio where they do it in agreement is the urology department of the GOM. Having booked on April 19th (i.e. yesterday) I connected with the CUP Regionale online booking system. First available date MONDAY 12/23/2024 in Palmi. Another appointment accepted, after seven days in urology of the GOM of RC for Tuesday 31 December 2024″.

“Perhaps no one realizes that for elderly and sick people (exempt due to pathology), giving reservations tens of kilometers away creates many problems and in any case always after eight months. We need to implement the system immediately and give priority to tests and visits to patients exempt due to pathologies to be carried out in the city. A quick examination can save a life and avoid costly interventions, mostly carried out outside the region, as the data on Calabrian oncological mobility for 2022 shows:
– 58% of cancer patients have operations outside the region (but who cares)?”.

“In 2022, of the cancer patients requiring hospitalization: 42.9% are mobile at great distances, 9.1% are mobilized in nearby regions and only 48% are hospitalized in the Calabria Region. Heartfelt thanks to the Reggio Public Health Department of the Grande Ospedale Metropolitano. The considerations are up to you, readers.”
