Once the long siroccal phase that characterized the May 1st long weekend ended, in the last hours a fast cold front passed between Sicily and Calabria, followed by cooler air, of temperate oceanic extraction, which pushed the thermometers to values below the seasonal averages. The marked variability of these hours is induced by the influx of cold air masses at high altitude, which were able to stabilize the air mass. In particular, where the reliefs (see the Peloritani) act as a springboard for the cool and humid flow from the NW, cumulus clouds develop, even pronounced ones, capable of giving rise to some brief and isolated showers of rain.
Temperatures rising on Sunday
The good news is that over the weekend the pressure will increase again, favoring a more decisive improvement in weather conditions, which will become more evident on Sunday, when a progressive increase in temperature is also expected. But now let’s see in detail the weather expected in this first weekend of May.

A day awaits us characterized by a partially cloudy or veiled sky, with large sunny spaces alternating with the passage of veils and banks of high, thin clouds. Some lower clouds will be present near the Peloritani and in the area of the Strait of Messina, but without causing any phenomena. Large clear spaces will prevail over the Ionian area. The climate, despite the intense solar radiation typical of May, will be made cool by the breath of moderate mistral ventilation, active especially in the Strait. Maximum temperatures will rise to +19°C, the minimum temperatures will drop to +13°C. Seas little moved, only the Tyrrhenian Sea moved.

It will be a mostly sunny day across all sectors, although there will be some temporary cloud cover. The increase in solar radiation (both in intensity and duration), characteristic of the month of May, added to a weakening of northern ventilation, will favor an increase in maximum temperatures, even a significant one, with peaks that could touch the threshold of +23°C +24°C. In the evening the presence of a clear sky and poor ventilation will allow a significant drop in temperatures, which will go below +14°C. Weak or absent winds and slightly rough seas, until calm in the evening.
Trend for next week
From Monday 6 May the weather will continue to remain stable and mostly sunny, even if a drop in pressure on the western Mediterranean will favor the return of the sirocco to our coasts, already by Monday evening. From mid-week a phase of greater variability could open, in view of a possible worsening, at the turn of May 8/9. But we’ll talk about this again in the next few days.
