Caserta, cycle paths in the centre: the construction sites of discord

A new roundabout to ease traffic and compensate for possible problems caused by the widening of the pavements where the new cycle path routes will have to be built. The new front of conflict concerns the narrowing of the roadway underway via Unità Italiana and viale Gold Medals where the pavement will be widened to allow the construction of the first two new sections of cycle path included in the project financed with 2.8 million euros of Pnrr. Works that are controversial given that the old cycle path (now ruined by lack of maintenance and disconnections along the route caused by the growth of tree roots) insisted on the already existing pavement.

Concerns strengthened by the images of daily chaos recorded along the two roads at the entrance and exit of the students of the comprehensive institute “Leonardo da Vinci” (like those that are punctually recorded in the morning, coinciding with school entry times, in via GM Bosco, where the roadway has been significantly narrowed in the stretch from via Cappiello to via Fratelli Rosselli).

An investment, the one wanted by the administration, which will concern the creation of 18 kilometers of two-wheeled routes along Viale Ellittico, Viale Carlo III, Viale della Libertà, Via Vivaldi, Via Isonzo, Via De Martino, Via Ferrarecce, Via Volta, Vicolo Carcais, via San Nicola, via Repubblica Napoletana, via Amato, viale dei Bersaglieri, corso Trieste, via Borsellino, via Sant’Augusto, via Einaudi, via Falcone, via Laviano, via Gallicola, viale Beneduce, via Tescione, corso Giannone (where the mini track now devastated by potholes and lack of signs will be revolutionized) and Piazza della Prefecture.

The tensions

The center-right councilors who thunder against the planned extension of the Caserta cycle network are worried, above all, by the lack of information relating to the projects financed by the Pnrr. «We don’t know – he claims Elio DiCaprio (League) ready to bring the case to the first “General Affairs” commission – which path the administration has decided to take. We have not had the opportunity to view the projects, there are no clear timescales and, what’s more, we are proceeding with the narrowing of a fundamental road for city mobility.

Already today, Via Unità Italiana and Viale Medaglie d’Oro appear insufficient to handle the traffic flows as can be seen in the hours of entry and exit from the school. Given this situation, wouldn’t it have been better to foresee the recovery of the old route on the sidewalk, leaving the current width of the roadway? The PD councilor replies Giovanni Comunale which announces the construction of a new roundabout in Largo Ezio Andolfato to drain the traffic flows along viale Medaglie d’Oro, via Unità Italiana and Beneduce Avenue. «We too were worried at the start of the works – he says – but the narrowing of the road currently underway will be limited to less than one meter to harmonize the dimensions of the pavements with those already extended in the first section of via Unità Italiana.

In any case, foreseeing possible problems, the offices have already prepared a project that will go forward approved by the council and which involves the construction of a new roundabout to avoid the turn into Viale Medaglie d’Oro for motorists who have to cross Viale Beneduce, lightening traffic flows in the area”. A project, the one announced by Municipalwhich does not fall within the Pnrr funding line with which the new paths are being created and for which the necessary funds will have to be found for the implementation which we hope to achieve by the start of the next school year, in September.

Meanwhile, the cycling association rejoices over the new creation of the cycle paths “Fiab-Caserta by bike” who praises the administration for the new route between Corso Giannone and the library “Alfonso Ruggiero” but continues to ask for attention towards alternative mobility with the relaunch of the figure of the municipal mobility manager who, he says Fable«in addition to being a legal obligation, it must constitute a fundamental element, a fulcrum for the coordination of all initiatives aimed at sustainable mobility».
