Venice Art Biennale 2024, the program and events not to be missed

The 60th Venice Art Biennale officially opens its doors today, Saturday 20 April, with the awards and inauguration ceremony. Until November 24th, the historic Pavilions in the Giardini, the Arsenal and the historic center of Venice will be filled with exhibitions and events. The 2024 International Exhibition, entitled “Stranieri Ovunque – Foreigners Everywhere”, is curated by Adriano Pedrosa, and is supported by 88 national participations. For the first time, four new countries are joining the exhibition: the Republic of Benin, Ethiopia, the Democratic Republic of Timor Esy and the United Republic of Tanzania.

The curator’s exhibition

This year’s Biennial, as a guiding principle, favors artists who have never participated in the International Exhibition. But particular attention will also be paid to outdoor projects, both at the Arsenale and the Giardini. As per tradition, in addition to the individual national participations, the heart of the event is the curator’s international exhibition. The exhibition is divided into two distinct hubs: the Contemporary Core and the Historical Core. As explained by the curator himself, Adriano Pedrosa, the exhibition is “a celebration of the foreign, of the distant, of the outsider, of the queer and of the indigenous” which “speaks of artists who are themselves foreigners, immigrants, expatriates, diasporic, émigrés , exiles and refugees. In particular of those who have moved between the South and the North of the world.”

The Italian Pavilion

The Italian Pavilion at the Tese delle Vergini in the Arsenale is also certainly worth a visit, curated by Luca Cerizza, with the project “Due qui/To hear” by the artist Massimo Bartolini on display. The theme of the project, as can be guessed from the title, is listening. The exhibition includes both visual elements and sound installations, with contributions specially created by musicians, writers. Also not to be missed is the Venice Pavilion, curated by the municipality of Venice, set up in the Gardens of Sant’Elena.

Exhibitions not to be missed

From “The Arch wi-thin the Arc” (at Palazzo Grimani) with the works of Rick Lowe, moving on to a contemporary art exhibition dedicated to the themes of migration and the encounter of the other which will be inaugurated on the 21st in the Ghetto of Venice, up to “Your ghosts are mine: Expanded Cinemas, Amplified Voices” with the works of artists from the Middle East, Africa and South-East Asia, there are many Venetian events not to be missed on the occasion of the 2024 Art Biennale. “Helmut Newton also arrives in the capital of the Veneto region. Legacy”, a sort of photographic biography of one of the most important figures in world photography, in addition to the first major exhibition in Italy dedicated to the poet, director and painter Jean Cocteau, and the “Breast” exhibition which reflects on the image of the breast in culture .

Many collateral events and special projects

In addition to the exhibitions, the Venice Art Biennale will stage 30 collateral events, organized in numerous spaces in the city. These initiatives propose a wide range of contributions and participations that enrich the pluralism of voices that characterizes the exhibition. Furthermore, the International Exhibition will host two special projects organized by the Venice Biennale. In Forte Marghera, inside the Polveriera Austriaca building, ten works by the Italian artist Nedda Guidi, present in the competition, will be exhibited. “Invited for the innovative techniques used in ceramic sculpture – explained Adriano Pedrosa –, Guidi combines the figure of the expert craftsman with the genius of art, not a “simple” ceramist but a sculptor fundamental to the evolution of contemporary ceramics” . In the Sale d’Armi, of the Pavilion of Applied Arts at the Arsenale, however, seven paintings and as many collages created by the Brazilian artist Beatriz Milhazes, known for her work which superimposes the Brazilian cultural imagination and references to modernist painting, will be exhibited western. With a rich offering of exhibitions, collateral events and special projects, the 60th Venice Art Biennale is therefore ready to enchant and inspire visitors from all over the world.
