NEW YORK (UNITED STATES) (ITALPRESS) – The mayor of Palermo Roberto Lagalla, together with the councilor for urban planning Maurizio Carta, was received today in New York by ambassador Maurizio Massari, permanent representative of Italy to the United Nations.
During the cordial meeting, Mayor Lagalla and Ambassador Massari spoke about possible initiatives and synergies in the field of cooperation.
Palermo can be a sort of activator of some pilot projects, in line with the spirit of the Mattei Plan, in particular by capitalizing on the city’s experiences in the field of urban regeneration, sustainable mobility and educational policies. The Sicilian capital is part of the UNESCO network of Educational Cities, which use the entire educational ecosystem, not only the formal one, but also the informal one, to increase community empowerment.
This would allow us to carry out cooperation that is not paternalistic or predatory, but which allows the countries with which we enter into relationships to achieve autonomy. This is the same approach that Palermo is implementing with Ghana, as part of a project financed by the European Union dedicated precisely to the financing of good practices in terms of urban regeneration and the fight against climate change. This allows us to build a reciprocal relationship with the Ghanaian community: Palermo transfers know-how and skills to Ghana and Ghana returns some important elements to Palermo. The idea of extending this approach to other countries with which Palermo historically has relations would allow not only to have a government cooperation project but also a process of democracy in the cities, in which the Municipalities dialogue directly with their counterparts. The meeting with Massari is part of the aim of intercepting the representatives of the various nations at the UN and therefore finding those contacts and subjects who have the task of building an ecosystem of cooperation.
