As many as 130 workers are at risk of returning home after Sgas, the company that manages the three RSAs San Raffaele di Troia, San Nicandro Garganico and Campi Salentina, announced the opening of the staff reduction procedure due to cessation of activity.
On Tuesday 23 April, a meeting was convened by the ‘Committee for Monitoring the Economic Productive System and Crisis Areas’ at 10.00 am in the Conference Room of the Presidency of the Region: “We welcome the convening of this table in the Region, where all the players in the field will be able to have their say“, comment the mayors of Troia and San Nicandro Garganico Leonardo Cavalieri and Matteo Vocale.
But while appreciating the attempt to find a solution to avoid what is a real tragedy for the operators and their families, the two mayors do not spare criticism: “The problem should have been addressed many years ago. However, we remain in daily contact with the local health authority and the Puglia region. We asked the Prefect for an urgent meeting on the employment issue, echoing the unions who are doing a great job in favor of the operators of these structures, who we certainly will not leave alone”. “We will not indulge in either services or workers’ rights protections”, add Cavalieri and Vocale.
“We announced this danger, someone had called us alarmists”, is the comment of Antonio Berardi, municipal councilor of San Nicandro Garganico, who promises battle: “We will not stand by and watch.”
The Italian Federation of Local Autonomy and Health (Fials) also intervened in the case, expressing concern about the situation and asking the company “to implement all the necessary measures to guarantee the maximum protection of employees in this delicate situation”.
In particular, Fials calls for the immediate payment of March salaries for the workers involved, for whom the state of unrest had already been proclaimed at the end of March: “In a moment of great economic difficulty, like the current one, with rent, loan and mortgage deadlines to be honoured, the lack of salary risks further aggravating the precarious situation of workers and their families”
