Landscapes and mountain farms

The “maso”, built essentially with stone and wood, is a characteristic structure of rural construction and a fundamental safeguard for the Alpine landscape and characterizes the territory of the Val dei Mocheni in a peculiar way. The workshop “Landscapes and mountain farms: knowing how to be a craftsman with stone and wood” was developed on this theme, organized by TSM|STEP School for the Government of the Territory and Landscape in collaboration with ENAIP Trentino Alta Formazione Professionale, Istituto Culturale Mocheno /Bersntoler Kulturinstitut, Landscape Observatory and Stelvio Trentino National Park.

Today, at the ENAIP headquarters in Villazzano, the students involved, around ten, presented the results of the training course and the farm models created in the laboratory starting from the various buildings analyzed during two excursions between the farms of Palù del Fersina and Val di Rabbi. The presentation was followed by a round table of dialogue and commentary in which architecture and landscape experts spoke.

The objective of the workshop was to analyze the complexity of the human action necessary to make the mountain livable and the “farm” building was taken as the unit of analysis for the recovery of traditional rural buildings, while the “farm system” it has been indicated as the unit of analysis for landscape regeneration. The students had the opportunity to work on different scales, starting from the field analysis of the landscape context and the artefacts present in the area of Palù del Fersina and Val di Rabbi, carrying out a manual laboratory for the creation of models in farms in volumetric blocks.

The workshop took place through a series of meetings in the months of March and April 2024, alternating classroom sessions with experts, study trips and excursions. The manual laboratory was conducted at ENAIP by students divided into groups, followed by teachers and tutors, referring to technical sheets and specific guidelines for the creation of volumetric models of wooden farmhouses. The training activity will also allow students to participate in a second workshop on farms to be held in the coming months, in which they will work alongside freelancers and public administration officials.

The workshop was held within the project “The strength of the minority: rebirth of a Germanic village south of the Alps”, financed by the PNRR. Before the presentation of the models by the students, Gianluca Cepollaro, head of TSM|STEP School for Territory and Landscape Government, Paola Coccia, director of the ENAIP Professional Training Center and Leo Toller of the Mocheno Cultural Institute spoke.
