“The red fascists are the only real ones left”

First the jokes on social media for a photomontage. Then the harsh attack on those who contested him outside the Quattro Mori. Finally, political propaganda in view of the next European and municipal elections. Nothing was missing on the day in which Salvini landed in Livorno to present his new book ‘Controvento’ and support Alessandro Guarducci’s (centre-right) candidacy for mayor. Even before his arrival in the city, the leader of the League had made headlines by responding, ironically, on social media to the image posted by LivornoGramm which portrayed him inside the Melafumo restaurant surrounded by a hammer and sickle and images of Che: “In life you have to be curious – his words – and so I went to look for the reviews of the place and commented”.

A moment of carefreeness before realizing what awaited him in Livorno. Harsh protests outside the Quattro Mori shouting “away with the fascists from Livorno” and “Salvini we don’t want you”. The current Minister of Transport, shortly before taking his seat in the theatre, wanted to reply to those who criticized: “Livorno is an open, curious and supportive city. Anyone who throws eggs at the police and threatens them is not. I’m sorry that in 2024 there will be are still red fascists who would like to prevent someone from presenting his book. I still thank the curious people of Livorno who, even if they don’t think like me, came to hear me.”

In the approximately two hours spent at the Quattro Mori, Salvini touched on many topics: from the relationship with General Vannacci “known thanks to the left and the newspapers”, to that with the current Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni “we learned to know and respect each other”. From the work on the Messina bridge, a work considered “fundamental for Italy” to the programs in view of the next European elections. However, a joke could not be missed also on the municipal ones that will see Livorno go to vote on 8 and 9 June: “Here the centre-right, as happened in other cities, can win”.
