EVENING OF UNREST IN PRISON IN BRISSOGNE – Valledaostaglocal.it

Massimo Chiepolo, secretary of the Autonomous Penitentiary Police Union, explains: “A group of prisoners, led by a non-EU citizen, devastated the roundabout of one floor, forcing the police to leave the department, risking being kidnapped. Moments of very strong tension which only the cold blood and professionalism of the police, who immediately isolated the troublemakers, avoided dramatic consequences. Numerous off-duty officers and reinforcements arrived from another Piedmontese institute intervened to bring the situation under control.”

The trade unionist denounces that “this is only the latest of the increasingly frequent violent acts carried out by prisoners and it is serious that the administration is unable to find a remedy and leaves the staff abandoned to themselves. Strong and heartfelt thanks go to all the policemen who intervened with great sacrifice.”

The complaint by Vicente Santilli, national secretary for Piedmont of the SAPPE, is firm: “These are events resulting from a situation of prison tension in the Piedmont-Aosta-Ligurian District already widely highlighted by the SAPPE, further aggravated by the lack of personnel: we ask for a technical inspection by PRAP and concrete interventions in favor of colleagues at the Aosta prison”.

For Donato Capece, general secretary of the Autonomous Penitentiary Police Union which expresses solidarity and closeness to the entire Aosta operational department, “urgent and structural interventions are needed that restore the correct legality to the penitentiary circuit by intervening primarily on the open custody regime. We need policemen and clear rules of engagement, technology and training for those on the front line in the Sections, tools for defense and combating violence”.

The reference of the national leader of SAPPE is to the need to “provide for the expulsion of foreign prisoners, a third of those currently present in Italy, to make them serve their sentences in their prisons and the reopening of the Judicial Psychiatric Hospitals where the prisoners can be placed with increasingly numerous psychiatric problems, now present in the ordinary prison circuit”. But Capece also returns to urge, for the Penitentiary Police, “the provision of the taser, which could be the useful tool par excellence in terms of anti-aggression; also because it is possible to know the physical and medical conditions of each inmate before being able to use the electric pulse gun”.
