Towards the playoffs, the commissioner asks for higher safety standards

The Municipality quantifies the cost of the necessary interventions at two million

The long wave of the post-Padova-Catania effects: the commissioner Marco Odorisio would like to increase safety standards in view of the “hot” play-offs of the playoffs. Increasing security at an infrastructure level obviously costs a lot. The corrective measures we are talking about, some of which should be carried out before the start of the play-offs (i.e. by 18 May), concern – as underlined today by the Corriere Veneto – first of all, the number one of the Padua policemen destined for the away fans (north curve), then the increase from two to four in the entrance turnstiles, and in the number of stewards up to 20 units within the sector , raising the plexiglass barriers to the height of the doors (to avoid any climbing over). It didn’t even end with placing a covering net to avoid the throwing of smoke bombs onto the pitch. All measures, those just listed, are essential if, on the occasion of the play-offs, we want to expand the capacity of the same north curve, now limited to two thousand spectators (considering that Padova could face teams with a high number of supporters, such as Vicenza, Perugia, Pescara, Avellino, Benevento, Casertana, Foggia and Catania itself).

The strengthening of the pre-filtering area and possible costs

There are also other requests from the police commissioner: as the Padua newspaper reports, Odorisio would like the current fence that delimits the so-called pre-filtering area to be replaced by a more robust palisade to contain possible breakthroughs. But this intervention, as leaked by the Municipality, would cost a good two million euros and, if the resources were found to put it into practice, we would have to wait for the assignment of the works. The alarm raised after Padova-Catania increased the concern around the matches played at Euganeo, after the invasion of the Etna ultras on the pitch and the attempted contact with the home fans. At the moment there is a technical table that is evaluating all the interventions that can be done on the stadium, both for the upcoming playoffs and for the 2024/25 season. The risk of not doing them? The unusability of the Euganeo Stadium.
