Social housing is not worth gnawing away, but concrete proposals

By Fabio Massa

Mom, how gnawing is Carmela Rozza. There is no event involving social housing that she does not involve herself in, thanks to her role as regional opposition councilor and former councilor of the Municipality of Milan. And so far, he is legitimate and within his rights. The problem is another. The problem is that intellectual honesty would require that when there is a problem (and God knows there are many problems!), it should be brought to light, and when there is something good and right, compliments should be given. So it happens that in via Russoli, in the southern area of Milan, Aler redevelops the towers, carrying out a work that can really change the face of the neighbourhood. Just look at the before and after photos: they are impressive. Aler here, Cap Holding there, different actors just one street away, are making the entire neighborhood a very liveable place. Applause for everyone? Yes, indeed applause for everyone, without looking left or right.

But no, it’s not applause for everyone. Because Carmela Rozza issues a statement in which she, verbatim, says that the “project developed only thanks to the will of the citizens, the Self-management Committee and the Committee of the inhabitants of the neighborhood called ‘Le sciure'”. In Rozza’s narrative there was no collaboration between Aler and self-management, as in fact it was. No: all the positive things were done by the citizens. And the offices and the employees of Aler, and the construction companies, and the officials, and who put the money into them? They’re all idiots: they did everything the wrong way. Obviously the aim is to attack the Region, which – according to Rozza – “says it is proud of the work”, for which it “has no merit”. In short, the usual game. However, this has largely tired the popular neighborhoods, which also in Milan have one of the highest rates of abstention in elections. A good remedy on the part of politicians would perhaps be to avoid theatrics. Because when there is praise to be had, one can praise it, it is not a sin. Or if you really can’t do it, stay silent: you’ll make yourself look better.
