Viterbo – “The city is absolutely not ready to become the European capital of culture. Let’s get it out of our heads. I saw the candidacy of Matera, another thing, another planet”. Maurizio Errigo is a professor of urban planning at the architecture faculty of La Sapienza University of Rome and professor of urbanism at the Delft Polytechnic in the Netherlands. Until last year he was also a member of the municipal planning commission.

And if this were not enough, “The historic center is dying – added Errigo -, and if this happens the city will die”.

Errigo yesterday, with Professor Alfredo Passeri, also a university professor, and Angelo Russo, creator of Symphony of Strings, spoke at the press conference From dream to decay at the Aless don Milani in Palazzo Grandori in Viterbo.

“There is no detailed plan for the historic center – Errigo pointed out -. Not only that, but the last urban planning idea for the city dates back to 1956. The last master plan is from 1979, in fact a copy and paste of the one from the 1950s. The city of the popes is in second place among the oldest master plans in Italy. Immediately after Catania.”

A historic center which, for Errigo, “is characterized by poor maintenance”. “A city – continued the university professor – where we often get excited about the ephemeral, such as road maintenance, without however being able to valorise the immense historical heritage we have. Instead, we should invest in history and the Middle Ages, thermalism and the UNESCO heritage linked to the transport of the Santa Rosa machine. As well as on its geographical position.”

“Instead, there is little awareness of the historical value of the city – concluded Errigo -, a spa tourism that brings little or nothing to the city and a brand, such as that of the UNESCO recognition which begins and ends on 3 September without generating any spin-offs. Not even a weekend. Viterbo could instead live off tourism by taking advantage of all this and its geographical position. Not only that, but still with regards to transport, it could use pieces of the Santa Rosa machines, currently closed in a warehouse, placing them in public spaces. All with a more agile regulation than the one on the adoption of roundabouts which places too many burdens on private individuals who, although interested in the matter, are forced to give up”.
