Cagliari Flash mob this morning 18 April in front of the courthouse on the initiative of the Criminal Chamber of Cagliari in collaboration with the “Socialismo Diritti Riforme” association as part of the campaign launched by the National Conference of Guarantors “There is no more time” to combat the phenomenon of suicides in Italian prisons. After the flash mob, which was attended by several dozen members of the Cagliari Criminal Chamber and the various member associations, a conference and debate on the dramatic conditions faced by Italian prisons was held in the library room of the courthouse. «Conditions which concretely make – said Franco Villa, president of the Criminal Chamber of Cagliari -, the execution of the prison sentence contrary to the sense of humanity, with a continuously increasing prison population in the face of a constant decrease in available places: in Italy 61,049 prisoners out of 51,178 places of regulatory capacity. 30 suicides from January 1st to today and 40 deaths from causes other than suicide. For these reasons the Criminal Chamber of Cagliari has decided to organize this morning’s event, aimed at raising awareness among institutions, politics and above all public opinion on a situation that is no longer tolerable” (text by Luciano Onnis, video by Mario Rosas)
